- Dobson, Aaron

I'd rather bet that Lucien makes the team over Dobson.
Lucien is my favorite pick in this year's draft class.

Had surgery on ankle and knee and still took a pay cut. If that's not being a Patriot, I don't know what is.

So...

Between Edelman, Amendola, and Gronk, Gronk is the healthy one.

Oooookay....

This is not really that surprising considering they are 3 of the most injury prone players in the league.

It's like people really forget that Edelman and Amendola used to be universally panned for being made of glass prior to 2014.

I'm one of Danny's biggest defenders but I don't see this as being some selfless act. If anything, the injury speaks more to Danny being wise and restructuring. He was probably going to be cut if he didn't restructure and that was assuming he was healthy. The fact that he was actually injured too makes it even more likely that he would have been cut if he didn't restructure.

Danny wouldn't have made a whole lot on the open market so his restructure was beneficial to both sides, imo.

I'd love to see this happen. He's the tallest of our receivers, and by the testing numbers, he's also the fastest. He's the best matchup type we have on the outside. I was a big fan of his coming out of college, and until he got hurt his rookie year, I was convinced he was the next great Patriots receiver. At this point I'd happily I'd settle for 2 - 3 catches a game for 600 yards and 4 touchdowns. Modest, achievable numbers if he stays healthy and makes the club.

The jury is still out. Even Easly was given less time.

To be fair, they are smallish guys that go over the middle and take a awful amount of hits. When you have absolutely no running game, your receivers are going to get the snot beat out of them on nearly every play. Right now, the Patriots have essentially zero healthy WRs that Brady is comfortable with - of course, it doesn't appear he is going to start the season either.

i certainly prefer the new 'start injured - end healthy' scenario
hope they stick to it

looks like a different Pats outing in Arizona than we thought just a month ago though ...

Like I said when they first brought Hogan in, the guy provides a redundancy to both Edelman and Amendola that the team didn't have otherwise. He can line up at the X but he's also a guy that can get open and get in and out of his cuts quickly. Once Edelman went down and Amendola went gimpy, the Pats didn't have that last year and their offense bogged down.

True, but with the roster limits what they are you can only have so much redundancy for each position.

maybe we should start the medical/absent list without BB

suspended - Brady
PUP - Lewis, Edelman, Amendola ... (add to your knowledge)
? - Solder, Vollmer, Stork, Blount, Gaffney, Mitchell, Slater (...)

(+ Ebner doing rugby duties and Cardona possibly not navy duties)

These surgeries explain a lot of the offseason activity though. They cut Lafell and Gibson (who never made it to the final 53 of course), but signed two veteran wide outs (Hogan, Washington) and drafted another two (Mitchell, Lucien). Possible they think they may need them all if Edelman and Amendola need to start camp on PUP.
Camp bodies do not require the use of draft picks. UDFA's work fine.

Areed. They are also some pretty special players in this system. It just works. If it ain't broke. ....

Patriots to be investigated by NFL offices for creating bionic receivers.

Obviously not encouraging news, but I don't think it's the end of the world. I'm a lot more bullish on Hogan than most, wouldn't be at all surprised to see him come in and have an immediate impact on par with Amendola in week 1 2013 (just minus the whole torn groin thing). As long as he, Gronk and Bennett are healthy, we'll have an effective passing game. And while I think WR2 is more than you can reasonably ask of Washington at this point in his career, it's not the end of the world if that's what he has to be for a few weeks.

And if Edelman and/or Amendola are looking unlikely to be ready for the start of the season, I wouldn't mind seeing the Pats take another look at Brandon Gibson. I thought he looked pretty good in the preseason last year. Sure, it seems foolish to bet on him making it through the season, but we wouldn't need him to. If his knee could hold up as WR3 for a few weeks until the reinforcements arrive, that would be enough. Alternately, we may need Mitchell and/or Lucien to produce earlier than expected. Not ideal either, but crazier things have happened.

Of course, one issue is who will at 100% for Games 1 through 4.

Amendola is one tough bastard if it says he has a chance at being ready for TC then I would not bet against him missing week 1. The guy played a season without his groin once.

Damn, another wake and funeral to go to...
