Very thin @ CB.. Will a trade for an experienced CB be viable?

FYI all of these scenarios involve Draft Picks.. in 2016, we have a very few picks.. 2nd, 3rd, 4th and two in the 7th.. we already traded away #5 for Keyshawn Martin and #6 for Jon Bostic..

Even in 2017 Roger, in an effort to destroy this juggernaut, took away the 4th round pick..

They're also getting compensatory picks in the 3rd round and likely three in the 6th round. Also, they got Houston's 6th rounder as part of the Martin deal. So we're looking at 10 potential draft selections. They can definitely afford to trade another one for a player that could help them now.

To hijack this thread:

I've been the secret president of the Duron Harmon fan club for a while now. He's the perfect example of a mid-round pick who's been in the system for a couple of years, working from the end of the bench up to starter, and he's the best playmaker (consistently anyway) in that secondary now.

Join the club. Watched a bunch of Rutgers games straight after the pick and really liked Harmon. Pegged him as a McCourty back-up then.

Harmon will be the best Scarlet Knight we took in this draft. Started watching Rutgers games to get a feel for our new players and Harmon is fantastic at supporting against the run, he really lays the wood. Also looks comfortable in coverage. He's my favourite Rutgers pick.

It's because he wasn't a playmaker due to his role. He played a long way off the LOS and rarely had to face much in the deep passing game because of the QBs he faced. As for an NFL starter, I doubt he was drafted for that. Before the draft started, the Patriots were saying this was a good depth draft but not one for finding starters.
...
Maybe they drafted Harmon because he was the best safety in the mid-rounds who could backup McCourty and his specific role; something we were lacking on the roster pre-draft.

He is playing at a whole new level this year.

He actually started at the end of last year, at about this level, especially in the playoffs. It lets McCourty play closer to the line at times, and cover if necessary, while Harmon's playing center field.

Harmon and Chung have both taken big leaps in the last season. We have an awesome Safety rotation.

He's still a very poor man's McCourty, but he's good enough. They are using the idea of 2 'Free' safeties in McCourty and Harmon like I'd mentioned in past seasons, and it's working well enough that it allows Chung to play the role of the LB/SS hybrid, which is covering P.C.'s weaknesses and letting him excel in his more limited role.

The team needs another CB, and covering TEs is still an issue, but this team is almost to the point where it doesn't really have any real weaknesses as long as everyone is healthy. And that's happening in the salary cap/FA era.

I saw somewhere that the lions are looking to be buyers lol. That's a joke. You could say they have been the biggest dissapointment this year.

Any offensive linemen the team could look at? Assuming Stork, Mason and Jackson are all healthy again soon, the interior should be fine, but the tackle situation is pretty rough. We are basically banking on Vollmer somehow staying injury-free all year while playing out of position, and he isn't exactly a paragon of health in the first place...

As someone else aptly put it, an injury to Logan Ryan, of all people, would be catastrophic. We're definitely not happy and hoping for a trade.

Yep. Big reason why the Pats are good vs TEs this year.

Sure we should shore up the position. Now, who is willing to trade us something for nothing?

@patscap: If Pats trade for Sean Smith, they would become responsible for 9/17ths of his $4.25m salary or $2.25m. He will be an UFA after this year.

That really is a tempting rental.

If their is a slight chance that losing to Detroit on Sunday helps our chances for a trade for Smith...then I will be hoping for a Chiefs loss. Early game 9:30 AM EST...I'll be watching.

@patscap: If Pats trade for Marcus Cooper, they would become responsible for 9/17ths of his 585K salary or $309,706. 2016 salary=675K

In this morning's column, Mike Reiss discusses the possibility of trading for a cb.

"5a. It might be a longshot, but if I'm Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and director of player personnel Nick Caserio, I'm calling the Titans before Tuesday's trade deadline to see if there's anything that might entice them to trade cornerback Jason McCourty, the twin brother of Patriots safety Devin McCourty. Cornerback is the position where the Patriots are noticeably thin, and Jason McCourty is scheduled to earn base salaries of $7 million in both 2016 and 2017. Would the Titans, who played competitive pass defense without McCourty in three games to start the season and then last Sunday when McCourty left with a hamstring injury, see value in clearing salary while adding either a 2016 third-round pick or 2017 second-round pick? I'm just spit-balling here, which is the only type of fantasy football I play.

5b. If not McCourty, Chiefs cornerback Marcus Cooper remains a target I think could interest New England if Kansas City would consider trading him for a late-round pick. Cooper is hardly playing for the Chiefs this season. The Patriots tried to claim him on waivers back in 2013 when he was waived by the 49ers, but the Chiefs had priority and trumped them."

Reiss doesn't suggest how they fit McCourty into the salary cap, but he ususually doesn't just throw things out there without giving it any thought. I for one would be psyched if this happens. I feel like we are just one good cb away from having a dominant defense. Everything on the defense is coming together. Easley is healthy and becoming a difference maker, Jones is becoming a force, Nink has gotten past some early season struggles and looks like his old self, Sheard is better than expected, we have depth at DT, and Hightower and Collins are awesome. We just need the pass coverage to tighten up. Adding J McCourty to join Butler with Ryan becoming the third CB just might do that. Along with D McCourty, Chung, and Harmon, our secondary will be formidable along with a great front 7.

First off, the Chiefs won't trade Cooper. He's going to be Sean Smiths replacement at the end of the season. Both Eric Berry and Smith's contracts are ending, and I'm like 90% sure they'll use the franchise tag on Berry.

With that being said, I'm going to go back to what I've been saying since week 2 of the season. SEAN SMITH, SEAN SMITH, and SEAN SMITH. With the trade deadline looming, by now, a bunch of other people have also picked up in the notion of a KC-NE trade for Smith. Honestly, it makes way to much sense. He's a top 5-10 overall corner who's in the prime of his career. Id easily give up a 3rd round draft pick for him because thats what you're sure to get in a form of a comp pick. He would change the level of our defense greatly, and would drastically increase our chances of getting another ring and going back to back. Seeing he's only 28 years old, you then use the Franchise tag on him to get him for a steal of around 13 million a season for another year, then let him pull a Revis and chase the big payday. Im praying KC loses today.
