MMQB: Butler deserving of All-Pro consideration

Yes. He was chasing Moncrief on a shallow crossing route. MB was a good 10 yards behind him in the middle of the field. As he was running for the 1st down towards the near sideline, MB caught him and make a textbook tackle stopping him short and forcing Indy to punt.

He was FLYING and was an equal pay to a pass breakup.

Took a great angle also.

This is hilarious, Butler has been a midling number 1 CB, which is great considering what we have seen the Patriots trot out there in the past. he certainly is well below Talib and brent grimes...maybe in the Chris Harris range?

Its this play right here why putting full stock in QB % allowed and QB rating against as a way of measuring a CB's performance is faulty.

Its 3rd and 10. Malcom played off him right at the 1st down marker. He makes the catch, navigates thru the defense, closes in on the ballcarrier and makes a textbook tackle. Punt.

The stats say he allowed a reception for 9 yards but in actuality he played the receiver and the play perfectly.

Hes faster than Talib. Better tackler too. Ball skills and ability to match up with bigger receivers goes to Talib.

Malcolm in Harris company is reasonable.

Give Malcolm another year of seasoning and experience and he is in the discussion of Top 10 CBs.

6. I think if I had to construct an All-Pro team today, I’d give strong consideration to Pats corner Malcolm Butler. At the very least, he’s a Pro Bowler right now.

Really high praise from a good film watcher.

Nice praise but no. He does not deserve a probowl bid this year. Not even considering him for it.

Talib/Revis/Sean Smith (KC)/Vontae Davis (Indy)/Adam Jones (Cin)

5 right there for sure over him IMO.

Sorry, I tried to like your post of the Butler play but hit the wrong little icon on my iPad mini

You can undo your rating, still shows as dislike.

It would be interesting to have a comparison to Revis/Sherman as rookies. He didn't play a lot last year. He makes some great plays but needs a little more experience, sometimes bites on a move that a veteran has seen in games and on film. He does seem to adjust well and doesn't hang his head on a mistake.
Revis gave up a Jordy Nelson touchdown in Green Bay in the final minute of the first half last year, which was a major factor in losing that game. IIRC he also gave one up in the Super Bowl early. Everyone gets beaten.

His play on the double move by Moncrief was really nice.

It was OK. Seeing as it was late in the game, the only route Butler should have cared about was the deep pass. If he gets beat on a come back, so be it. Moncrief also didn't turn his head or his body at all, so Butler had no reason to commit to anything but a restart.

I'm not saying a better cornerback would have done anything all that different, just that it wasn't that difficult a play.

I think he has been good but some here just don't see it and keep harping on how he is not naturally athletic and slow. He had a 4.4 40 at the pats tryout but they go by a 4.6 they have recorded somewhere. People don't realize game speed is different than running the 40 in your shorts speed. Boyce was a burner but he didn't do anything with pads on.
That's interesting. Because I've always thought that being naturally athletic is a strength in his game since I saw him in training camp last year. The first time I saw him I thought he had that natural athletic smoothness in his movement that you want in a corner.

Who says that? Butler is tremendously quick and only gets beat deep on double moves (edit: or if he misses a jam, like below :)). Athleticism is not a criticism that can be levied at Malcolm.

For a first time starter being thrusted into the #1 CB role, I think Butler is doing an excellent job. But All Pro consideration?

Those jump balls really seem to be his weak spot

I don't want to single anyone out but I hope they read this thread and start giving Butler more credit. I think they are just still stuck on Revis.

His coverage skills are incredible, so agile and quick to the ball. His mistake is being a few inches too short on a few balls, and not hanging onto a few potential INT's.

I don't consider his season to be Pro Bowl worthy, let alone All Pro, but there's a LOT to like. When catches are made on him he's always (with the exception of one catch he gave up to Brown in the Steelers game) battling for positioning, right on the receivers hip. That's a great sign, next step will be defending those balls and coming out with a few of them in his hands. I'm incredibly confident he'll get there, he has the competitiveness and athleticism to do it imo.

Dont think revis was revis in his second year . If he stays healthy and consistent , he can only get better.

IMO the problem is not that he is being "out-leaped" but the actual timing of it.

The good news is that he is in position and able to make a play. If he wasn't doing that then that is a whole different set of concerns.

All pro is a reach. But Malcolm is coming along nicely. One thing I have noticed with Malcolm, he is a great tackler.
