Breaking: NYJ fined $100,000 for Revis tampering

The conversation that needs to happen:

Robert Kraft - "So, Roger, what are you planning to do after you step down following the upcoming season?"

Roger Goodell - "Bob, I don't know who told you I wanted to step down, but I love this job. I have no plans to step down."

Robert Kraft - "Rodger, I don't think you understood what I was asking."

Deus, At this point, I just don't see that happening. RK has been too play nice for too long,

I don't think he has it in him to do what is necessary (publicly expose and tear down the league ) to get rid of this menace. And that is only way he will go. There are plenty of owners who don't mind to see 30 teams treated avg, 1 treated well, and 1 like **** (as long as the one is ne).

This inconsistency from the league is alarming. Again, I was not expecting much - but this "fine" is negligible. Considering the amount spent on Revis, adding 0.1 M is a joke.

Doesn't really count as spent on Mevis -not like it counts vs the cap or anything

Can we all calm down, please??? If the Patriots are not being distracted by the Jets, then why should we be? They can all go to hell, for all I care. As long as we keep winning games, I'm fine with the decision.

When your the little sister of the league. Unable to compete with the professional franchises, you get a break when you mess up. Who wants to punish the little girl with the dopey parents that act up. You pat them on the head, tell them not to do it again. And let them go. :(
They dream of one day actually amounting to something. Every year a new hope, every year a bigger frustration.
But hope springs eternal in the city that never sleeps. This is the year, Revis is back! Never mind that he never helped them before. This time its for real! ;)

I think there is something to that. If you're a "good" team and you break the rules, your punishment will be worse than if you're a "bad" team. It's like, if you're a bad team and you get docked a high draft pick, there's almost no chance that you'll ever recover.

In 2007, the Patriots punishment was conditional on if they made the playoffs. The team would have lost a 2nd pick if they missed the playoffs. The Falcons were just punished for doing something that directly impacted opposing team's offenses. They combined for 10 wins over the last 2 seasons, so they received a monetary fine and lost a 2016 5th round pick. If the Falcons had been a better team or if the Seahawks were caught doing the the same thing, I have to believe the penalty would have been much higher.

With the tampering penalty and the Jets, that tells you just how much they suck. The league couldn't even risk having them swap draft positions with the Patriots in any round because that would strengthen NE and make the Jets that much weaker.

Most folks were expecting a fine from the very beginning.

Well Good Ole' Rog just set a precedent that NFL owners can talk about players that are under contract to other teams during press conferences and how they would like to sign them and only expect a $100k fiine.
Only for Pats players.

Absolutely ridiculous!

Why even bother having a tampering rule? If he went by precedent, it should have at least been a 3rd round pick. Kraft surprised me with his Michael Corolenesque presser when they landed at the Super Bowl, maybe he will surprise me again with a call for roger's head. Of course the league releases this BS punishment before they will finally have to exonerate the Pats with the wells report.

I'd love an explanation of how the penalty was arrived at.
You would have to think that since Revis actually delayed his contract negotiations until after the Jets could participate that it would be considered severe, since, it worked. Remember the point of tampering rules is to protect the ability of the team to negotiate with players under contract without being influenced by another teams communications to or about the player. The fact that he signed there is further reason to consider it more severe.
It would seem the only reason to give a light penalty compared to other similar infractions would be to say that Woody Johnson is a dope and no one takes him seriously so his attempt to influence the Patriots negotations with Revis should not be taken seriously. Having the benefit of hindsight seems to obliterate that reasoning though.

After the precedents set in the Briggs and Cunningham cases, it should be clear for all to see:

-And finally a child cried out, "But he isn't wearing anything at all!"

Watch the draft and you'll witness The Emporers New Clothes indeed.

250K and docked a draft pick for interpreting a memo in their own special way yet the Jets commit the more heinous significant rules violation, precedent is ignored and they only receive a fraction of the Cameragate punishment.

Goodell needs to go.

Should Roger come hard at NE and not take stock in the failings of his office from the disgusting amount of leaks and that obvious botched sting operation perpatrated by none other than his own current VP of game operations Mike Kensil and former Jet employee I don't now how anyone with a sane apptitude could call him Kraft's lackey and whipping boy.

This League Office should be burned from the inside and begun anew. Even non-Patriot fans are recognizing it.

I'm just saying I would like to understand the logic of the decision. Certainly there was a reason for giving less than the last 2 tamepering violators got. I'd like to know what reason was used.

There is no logic. Like most things under Goodell (yes, I have changed my tune), the only consistency is the consistently **** decisions the league makes.

Keep in mind that there are two consistent features of Goodell's reign as commissioner, the Jets get special favorable treatment and the Pats get the shaft. Anyone that doesn't believe that is kidding himself at his own peril and that of the team he owns.

I think the timing here is all very interesting. We knew nothing about if this was even being looked at for a while, then suddenly we are hearing the Wells report will be out soon and BOOM! Report: the Jets barely get fined and NO pick swap or forfeiture! Patriots lose this battle!

It seems like the NFL knows the Wells report is going to exonerate the Pats, so they quickly released their anti-Pats tampering decision beforehand to somehow level it all out.

Let me direct this to Ivan, Vector and Shmessy. Welcome to the reality of Goodell's NFL. The first shoe has fallen and the second is not far behind. This verdict was rendered not by Goodell's henchmen but by the POS himself who was praised as doing a good job by the owner of the Pats not so long ago. I will say no more at this time but direct you to Curran's column about the ongoing witch hunt. I realize he is not as credible as the Sharks of Vegas which most people rely on but I think he might have some insight into what is going on.

Well, we probably don't agree with the logic, but there was criteria used to make the decision.
Thats what I would like to know. What criteria he used to arrive at that punishment.
Saying the decision is bad doesn't answer how the decision was made.

The Jest have the 6th overall pick in the draft. So they will probably pick a player like Vernon Gholston anyway.
Gholston was drafted by the New York Jets sixth overall in the 2008 NFL Draft.:D
