agreed..we will be back next week....people will get healthy...we will start to get better, as will everyone else...it was a crappy loss but you just kinda move on don't ya??

Full rule from that PDF:

DEFENSIVE TEAM FORMATION
Article 3: Defensive Team Formation
(a) When Team A presents a punt, field-goal, or Try Kick formation, a Team B player, who is within one yard of the line of
scrimmage, must have his entire body outside the snapper’s shoulder pads at the snap.
(b) When Team A presents a field-goal or Try Kick formation:
(1) No more than six Team B players may be on the line of scrimmage on either side of the snapper at the
snap; and
Note: These restrictions do not apply if a team does not present a standard punt, field goal, or Try Kick formation (an equal
number of players on the line of scrimmage on either side of the snapper in a tight formation), or if, after the offensive
team has assumed a set position, there is a shift, or a player goes in motion.
Penalty: For illegal formation by the defense: Loss of five yards.
(2) Team B players cannot push teammates on the line of scrimmage into the offensive formation.
Penalty: For unnecessary roughness: Loss of 15 yards.

Doesn't "team B" simply indicate the defense?

I'm sure that there's going to be a lot of really bad posts made in this thread, so I'm just going to take a post from the game thread, modify it and add a bit at the end, and them I'm outta here so the two extreme sides can lob grenades at each other:

The Patriots defense is missing both of its NFL starting-level DTs. It's missing it's best LB, who happens to be the only LB capable of covering against the pass. It's missing its CB1, which leads to the CB3 and S2 being exposed.

The Patriots offense is missing it's best WR. It's dealing with a TE who's playing his first game of the year. It's missing it's only RB receiving weapon. It's got a pair of rookie WRs who are inconsistent, at best, and who struggle mightily against man coverage. It's got a center who is not starting quality going against an excellent pair of DTs. It's got a LT who's been struggling for much of this young season.

All this, and the team is coming off a last-second win in an emotional game, against an excellent opponent.

With that in mind, why were people posting as if they were shocked that this game was a struggle and ended in a loss?

Now, having done that, I'll just make one quick rant:

It took an offseason of incredible incompetence on the part of the "GM" to get this team to the point where the greatest offensive lineups in history have turned into this steaming turd.

Congrats Bill! You've taken the best team in the league and turned it into a mediocrity, in just one season. I sure as hell hope your changes improve by the factor of about 1000 that they'll need to in order to get this team just back to where it should have been.

Your last paragraph is downright laughable. The one mistake was letting Welker walk. Otherwise you are incredibly spoiled and ungrateful for it. We are 5-2, get a grip and enjoy the Belichick years while they last.

If you want to complain direct it at Tom Brady. I love the guy but he has been very inefficient.

Belichick's comment on Gronkowski's return: "I don't know. We'll have to look at the film."

Classic BB.

Fred Smerlas just read the entire rule. It's in there.

It really isn't. It's one simple line that makes no mention of where anyone lines up.

From Mike Pereira:

The league made two adjustments:

• First they said the defensive team could not overload one side of the center with more than six players.

• They then addressed a situation that they had been talking about for years when they decided to not allow the defensive team to push one of their teammates into the offensive formation.

It makes no difference where you are originally lined up - Rule 9-1-3, the new rule, says "Team B players cannot push teammates on the line of scrimmage into the offensive formation." That’s exactly what happened in this play.

Re: Stupid wasted game by our offense

Brady seriously needs to work on his deep throws. He needs a bit more air under these throws. His line-drives when he throws it deep are almost always an incomplete. He doesn't give his receivers a chance.

I don't think it is a matter of working on he deep throws. Brady is who he is - and he is not an accurate deep thrower. It's not a strength. I think Josh M needs to stop watching 2007 tapes and look at 2013 tapes.

For those of us who look to "good losses" - This defense is adjusting to new personnel. Let's see how they do next week even if Talib isn't playing.

Re: Re: The official Pats-Jets post-game thread

It is one of a series of long-snapper protection rules put into effect in the last few years. This one was added this year. It is only in effect on FGs.

Roger Goodell doesn't make the rules. The owners do, with input from the competition committee, which has zero league office membership.

If it's dangerous to the LS, it is dangerous to whoever is in the run scrum when a ol does it to the ball carrier.

In regards to the penalty during the FG try, it was dumb to even try that crap. If the coaches knew there was a new rule this year, the risk/reward is not even close to leave it up to chance for the refs to interpret what they see on the field.

Dumb.

Racking my brain for some positives from the game and I suppose one from our first deive was Gronk taking a really big hit to his fore arm on his first catch and it didn't put him off for the rest of the game!

We just need to get the bye week.

Where's the beef!

Here's the full rule, not just the part that let's one disagree with BB:

Team B players cannot push teammates on the line of scrimmage into the offensive formation

Chris Jones started from the LOS, there's no way to interpret him as a "Team B" or "second level" player. It was a bad call, but not uniquely influencing the outcome of the game.
I guess if either team had a touchdown lead then gifting a team a field goal would not influence the outcome. Let me remind you that was not the case in this game. The Pats would have had the ball on their 46 yard line needing 15 yards for a chance to win.

I've got an officiating question:

Late in the 1st half or early in the third, it was 3rd and short and Brady was hit by Pace and Richardson. He fumbled, the ball rolled forward and Solder (or maybe Vollmer) dove on it. Solder was short of the first down and it was initially spotted as 4th and 1. The officials conferred and moved it back to the spot of the fumble, setting up 4th and 6.

I know there are rules around a fumble lost forward and recovered on 4th down, but this was third down. Am I just unaware of the rules or is this a new interpretation of fumbles that go forward and are recovered by a teammate?

In regards to the penalty during the FG try, it was dumb to even try that crap. If the coaches knew there was a new rule this year, the risk/reward is not even close to leave it up to chance for the refs to interpret what they see on the field.

Dumb.

Agreed- they don't need any help missing a 56 yarded from the right hash

Not if you are playing against the Jets and the Ref's at the same time

We were 21-10 up and had the ball to start the second half.

We lost the game, forget the rest.

Were you complaining last week at the blown holding call on Solder at the end of the game?

As I said, you win some, you lose some.
