Pats sign WR Lavelle Hawkins

Good to see the Patriots are taking the Chinese Olympic approach at receiver; throw as many against the wall and see which ones stick.

They did that last year. But the difference this year is that with the rooks and FAs the talent is much better. Last year's FA's and summer camp class sucked, exception Lloyd who's still below the cut for 2013..

I'm pretty sure they are both cousins of DW Toys so most likely

As are you my Cousin, Cousin. Thanks for the air time.
Me thinks this has something to do with the Julian "Oh no not again" Edleman issue. Thinking now that TJ Moe has a bigger opp to catch on to the 53 as does this kid.

He'll be wearing Welker's old number so he's got to stick, right? ;)

One might say that we have retooled our Wide Receiving Corps.. could be an interesting ride, to see who rises to the top.

Understanding that you're only joking, I'm actually seeing the choice to give out Welker's old number as the other way around.

In other words, Hawkins is only camp fodder and the number likely may not end up being used this season. In the meantime, they really have no choice but to give someone #83 for the time being.

At this time last year I was feeling good about who we had for receivers. Thought we had the potential to have some very good guys who knew the PATS System.

I think the huge difference is that last year we had a lot more NFL expedience. We start this year with a very young wide receiver corp outside Jenkins.

Again I have a good feeling about who we have at receiver.

I have not watched the show in years, but doesn't Survivor start with 12 contestants.

$175,000 sounds like a lot for camp fodder. Hawkins has as good a chance for the 1 or 2 slots after Amendola, Dobson and Boyce as any of the others.

To whom are you referring?

Without doing the research, would I be incorrect in assuming that this is the tallest crop of WR's that Brady has ever had at his disposal in his career?

You may be correct, but perhaps we are going a bit overboard. Only one of the top 4 is over 6 feet.

Amendola 5' 11"
Dobson 6'3"
Boyce 5'11"
Edelman 5'10"

Even the most likely candidate for the mythical 5th spot is Jones at 6 feet even. Of course the 5th spot would be necessary if either of the rookies are not ready for prime time as rookies.

You know what's interesting? Lavelle Hawkins got $150,000 in guaranteed money. Julian Edelman, Donald Jones, Michael Jenkins got nothing.

I wouldn't have guaranteed this guy a dime. He hasn't done jack squat in 4 of his 5 years in the league,
and in his only halfway-decent season he averaged a measly 10 ypc.
Oh, and he also missed 10 games in 2010 and 9 games last year.

I can name at least a half-dozen guys Bill should've signed instead of this bum which, to quote Terry Malloy,
is what he is, let's face it.

I have always liked Edelman and thought there is more to him-He and Faulk seemed to be the only ones on offense to show up against the Ravens his rookie year.

Lloyd appeared to be a potential number 1 receiver.

Gaffney had success with the Patriots and was coming off a good year with the Redskins.

Stallworth had some incredible physical tools and if he had a limited route tree and somehow his hands had improved I thought he could add some dynamic.

Branch and Brady seemed to share gray matter.

Ochostinko had to be better than what he showed his first year.

As confident as you may have felt last year, the WR corps put up lousy numbers in the WR3 (21 catches from Edelman) and WR4 positions (16 catches from Branch).

Outside of Wes Welker, the WR grouping was extremely limited in talent and put up some pretty lousy numbers. Llyod was acceptable, but I'm guessing that Belichick feels that someone else can make better use of their talents in terms of speed and YACs.

There was nowhere to go but up...so I don't blame them for having a complete overhaul at the WR position.

This hawkins guy seems very similar to donald jones. I really can't wait to see how this unfolds. Everyone besides jenkins has some speed. Man I am excited for the first time in years. Outside of welker, I thought we have had the worst wr corp for awhile now. I have wanted to see edelman cut for years even though I love his st contributions, I never wanted ocho from day one and branch is a ghost at times. I wasn't excited to see gaffney or stallworth come back for another tour. I thought they were washed up and actually wanted tiquan underwood back. I also wanted to see anthony gonzales but that never happened. Last year i only had hope in welker and lloyd.

Then I had false hope in taylor price and brandon tate. This year, in my mind anyway, is going to be better than 07.

Yes, we are probably better outside of Welker. After all, SOMEONE has to show up to be as good Lloyd, don't they? And the winner of the JAG competition will easily replace Branch.

But that ignores the real issue. Welker had more talent than the entire 2013 WR corps. We had one of the very best passing offenses in the history of the NFL with Welker and the JAG's. There isn't much reason, other than we must, to believe that this group of wide receivers is better than last year.

Yes, if Gronkowski and Hernandez are at 100% for the playoffs, we will likely be fine (a cynic would add Edelman).

We are counting on several players to step so that we can have a passing game equal to 2013: Vereen and a couple of wide receivers.
