    My Jersey:

He'll be decent depth. He just was never able to break top 3 in Tennessee for whatever reason, he had a hard time learning the playbook when he came in to the league.

I'm thinking he'll be more like decent camp fodder. He'll probably tear it up in the fourth quarter of the first pre-season game.

I remember him from his college days, when he teamed with Desean Jackson at Cal, but don't remember him doing anything in the Pros.

Pro playbooks apparently just complicate things for no reason. Didn't you hear?

I know he's just camp fodder, but what's the point of signing a guy who can't learn a simpler offense's playbook? Maybe Belichick just wants to make sure the corners are getting their TC reps against NFL-caliber athletes, then will cut the guy once that's done.

Did some digging as I was curious..

Hawkins did have a 3.1GPA in HS but didn't meet the ACTs so he went to a JuCo after HS.

With that said, Hawkins scored ok on the Wonderlic (23)

Whosdat? LOL. Well the Patriots offseason overhaul of the WR position continues. Curious that they signed him to a 2 year deal though. Maybe they like him just a little bit more than Jenkins or Jones?

I think there are a few things going on here.

With Dobson being drafted, I don't see Jenkins making this team.

I tend to think that with Josh Boyce and Edelman both nursing foot injuries (but should be ok by camp) and Donald Jones not a shoo-in either Hawkins is being brought in to compete at the 5th WR position/KR specialist.

Yep. Typically, at this point in the offseason, the guys the Pats sign are usually signed to throw into the competition at camp. If they stick, then they have a spot on the team. That's essentially what Hawkins is.

    My Jersey:

Reading between the lines, the Pats have really been hurt by the lack of legit WR depth in recent years. We relied on Deion Branch to be a third wideout in playoff games. Tiquan Underwood played real snaps. Last year we had no one behind Welker, Edelman and Lloyd, and we were really limited when Edelman was injured. Even more embarrassing, none of the receivers could return kicks, forcing us to use McCourty.

Jones and Hawkins are similar-caliber players, though Jones is probably better and more physical. They're both better than Deion Branch at this stage of his career, or Donte Stallworth off the street. Even Jenkins is probably an upgrade over Branch. The two rookies hopefully will be. Four of these new guys -- Hawkins, Jones, Dobson and Boyce -- are faster than the wideouts we had last year.

BB's thought process seems to be to try to upgrade those matchups against nickel and dime CBs by putting legit NFL receivers, if not stars, at the end of the roster. It's dull, but it makes sense.

I think Jones signed a 3-year deal. Anyway, a 2-year deal without significant guaranteed money is essentially a team option for a 2nd year. I think players on minimal deals would rather have them for 1 year. If they do well, hit FA on a high. If they suck, they get cut either way. Don't want to do well and have to play a 2nd year on a minimal deal.

    Hawkins
    Jenkins

That's my take. It's not unheard of we carry 6 WRs if they contribute on ST and some are developmental. It's also not unheard of we carry only 4. Will be intriguing storyline come summer.

    My Jersey:

Slater's roster spot is secure, but I have a lot of trouble allocating a spot from the WR group for him. Him being denoted as a WR is rather arbitrary, and I would wager/hope he factors little into Belichick's evaluation of the position. Frankly, he's played a lot more snaps on defense. If I'm going to call a guy a wide receiver, he better have more than one catch in a five year career.
