Barwin?

with the current scheme, I'll take paul kruger.......

barwin would have been handy if the pats were in a 3-4

Kruger will be way too expensive.

This statement has been bugging me this year. Almost every guy that's on the market has been apparently deemed as "too expensive".
Look, the fact is, we have among the most cap room of any serious contenders this year. Sometimes, it's okay to pay a little extra for a guy if you know he's gonna help you win, and help you get the Lombardi.

Sure, but Paul Kruger isn't the guy to overpay for.

If we sign Kruger does he get paid in

????

and Jimmy Connors won a bar?..playing tennis??..is that even legal?

I find it extremely ironic that if Rob Ninkovich had the same production this past season as Connor Barwin he would have been vilified. Yet so many people here take it for granted that Barwin would be an improvement as an edge rusher. Just another example of where perception is greater than reality

BB wil sign him and make him a TE

Maybe he isn't. I'm just saying I get annoyed with people constantly wanting us to not shell out any money for higher-quality FA's.

I hope we sign him, we won't get a shot at Johnson unless its in trade and I agree that Kruger is over rated.
Barwin is more explosive and he will come cheaper due to a down year.
It sounds like he's begging to be a patriot but there will be others for his services.

This fan base has taken on the personality of the team. It happened a long time ago, so the penny-pinching stuff from posters isn't likely to go away any time soon, especially with Brady doing what he did.

(A) Barwin fills an important need that has been missing for years: TD-catching LB.
(B) Sign Connor Barwin, draft Connor Vernon, and let the confusion begin! :)
(C) Did I mention Barwin can also play TE? :D

That philosophy worked great for the Jets.

Oh wait... no, they're in cap hell with lots of overpaid, overrated players and marginal young talent due to trading picks.

Understanding that your context is a bit different:

Recent big money pacts have been given to Brady, Gronkowski, Hernandez, Mankins, Welker (both in the form of the tag at 9.6m and a likely new deal), Wilfork, and Mayo. I'm not seeing as much cheapness as some would claim, just the fact that they tend to reward players from their own system, and do not gamble as much with outsiders unless they are reasonably priced or in a tier of their own talent wise.

As far as FA goes, Belichick is likely going to continue his philosophy of assessing each player's value in his own specific way. In other words, he's always going to place value very highly, and not make any moves of a gambler's desparation.

I think we'll see the needs addressed, and they should be able to compete pretty well in free agency, even if it isn't necessarily a top notch player and more likely a couple of middle tiered players + some vets.

One thing's for sure, they will be spending to the cap, so that money will go somewhere.

Another thing to keep in mind is that many teams are really starting to feel the effects of the current flat cap era as they wrongly overestimated a couple of yrs ago as to how much money would be available, and are likely still overestimating how much new money will kick in when the 2015 TV contracts come into play.

They are trying to prepare themselves in a different manner, and have been for awhile now. This could be only the beginning of the release of good players every single season for the next 3-4 yrs for cap strapped teams. Now is not the time to get away from a proven winning formula, but possibly even more of a time to dig in and take advantage of these mistakes.

We know they'll be spending to the cap again, and they'll also be carrying over some money to next season again too. That is necessary to stay ahead of the curve and eventually they'll be signing some of the better players who have been cap casualties for great value---possibly even this year on some level.

I think a bigger question is would Barwin represent a significant upgrade over Nink? Nink is in the final year of his current contract and is due a 3.0 million cap hit, with a 2.4 million savings if cut.

it was a comparative statement.......neither is a priority
