The 2013 Prospect Thread

Cal @ Ohio State (only scouted Cal)

Deandre Coleman would be a good fit here. He mostly plays over the tackle in a 3-4 (5-tech) but also plays over the guard (2-tech) in 4 and 2 man fronts. That’s what he would do here and I think that’s a need for this team. I wasn’t too impressed with his play. It’s only one game, and I usually like to get in as many games as I can. I’d put him in the same class as the other 2/5-tech prospects I like: KLM, Dial, Campbell.

Keenan Allen did not impress me, but it was only one game, and one of his lesser games at that. He is a very good and willing blocker though.

Fresno State @ Tulsa

I was wrong (kind of) about Phillip Thomas. He’s pretty good. He’s very fluid and smooth. He played a lot of man coverage in the slot and blitzed the edge from there too. Showed good instincts and a nose for the ball.

I’m still a big fan Dexter McCoil.

Intriguing late round/UDFA FB/TE prospect

Kyle Juszcyk, TE, Harvard

6'3", 245 lbs

Excellent hands, good blocker and route runner. Presumably a smart guy coming from Harvard. Very impressive video.

We haven't seen a mock from you in a while have we? What's your thinking at the moment?

I had one that was close to ready, but the new rankings blew that up.

Brugler must be reading my posts.

I'm thinking that early in the draft there is a gap in between the value I would want (or accept) and the value that will be available. Can Cooper fall to us? Maybe, but it looks more like we will have to choose between Kawann Short, DeAndre Hopkins, Xavier Rhodes, or Barrett Jones. Someone like that.

I'd rather trade down and out and take more shots later in the draft if that's the case. I don't buy the idea that the trade down is dead. The draft is still far out and there's a lot of moving pieces, but I don't like the way the top of the draft looks right now. This probably won't be a popular opinion.

i like that kyle juszcyk seems like he would definitely worth the 7th rounder or UDFA. I think now is the time to trade away mallett for a pick in the second round or 3rd either one would be good we could sign matt cassell back and that would be fine. For the draft I want us to trade our 1st round pick for a 2nd and 3rd/4th If it is an earlier second rounder we will be good. The players we should target are Cooper, Fisher, Ansah, Williams, Hankins for first round (any would be good 2nd round Lemonier, Austin, Patton, Hunt, van noy or Jamar Taylor and 3rd round McFadden, Wheaton, Winters and whoever else has dropped etc. Aperfect draft for me would be trade first round pick for 2nd and third round then draft Williams (hope he drops) then Patton and then Jamar Taylor and Leon Mcfadden third round then 7th round Kyle juszcyk and tyrann mathieu/kyle long

I can see Cooper slipping. DeCastro fell to 24 last year and Zeitler went 27. Warmack will probably be picked outside of the Top 10-12. We're picking at 28th as of now. Wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities to drop to our pick. I wouldn't have a problem with him because it would upgrade two positions. RG and move Connolly to C.

Bill should've used 21 on DeCastro, then taken Jones at 25.
Hightower is way too slow for 4-3 OLB, and his effort sometimes is appalling.

And the Tavon Wilson pick on Lavonte David:D

David was my binky, and I loved DeCastro. I would have been thrilled with that threesome. But hindsight is 20-20, and I wouldn't rule out Hightower, who has shown signs of being a stud for us, in spite of being slowed by an injury. There's also no guarantee that Chandler Jones would have lasted to 25 if we had taken DeCastro at 21, so we might have missed out on a vital piece of our defense.

And Captain, I have a sneaking suspicion that if we'd drafted DeCastro and he'd gotten injured and Hightower was putting up big numbers for someone else that you'd have criticized "Bill" for not taking Hightower.

In general I would have taken that risk, TFB is the biggest impact player on the team and I prioritize protecting him, not just for this season but for the future as well.

Taking Tavon Feckin Wilson at 48 is simply gawd-awful poker-playing at the draft table.
Bill showed his hand way, way, way too early on that one.

Sorry, but why would I have criticized Bill for taking the best player availble regardless of position,
and at a position of need? The FO should have been aware of Mankins' surgery and of the possibility
that Waters' return wasn't a lead-pipe lock.

Now if there were only one 1st-round pick at his disposal, then I would not have faulted Bill for taking
the best available pass-rusher instead of the best available OLman.

You've got some very nice names there, a lot of whom are on my want list.

Last small school guy for the day. You will LOVE this one though.

Garrett Gilkey, LT, Chadron St.

6-7, 320 lbs.

So I started watching this video and on the first play he knocked the defender over. I thought to myself "love it when a lineman does that". He then did it on the second play, fourth play, fifth, sixth. You get the picture. Tell me this guy doesn't bring a smile to your face watching him beat opposing defenders.

And watch out for the play at 2:59. Block Forrest, Block!!

Has reportedly had a combine invite so that should be fun.

It's not clear to me that they didn't do exactly what you say, take the best player avaialble, and at a position of need - Chandler Jones. DE was certainly a need, and a need most people had been screaming for for a long, long time. Jones was considered a possible top 10-15 pick going into the draft and possibly the first DE off the board. He was a steal dropping to 21, and was BPA. A stud LDE has more value than a stud guard. I love DeCastro - I'd been following him for 2 years prior to the draft, longer than anyone on this board - but there's no way I pass up Chandler Jones for DeCastro. Now if Pittsburgh had taken Hightower or DeCastro at 24 that would have been different, but it didn't happen.

The Pats reportedly had Jones and Hightower rated about equally, but took Jones first because they didn't think he would last until 25.

As someone rightly pointed out in another thread, we won Super bowls with Tom Ashworth at RT. I'm not losing sleep over DeCastro.

Just ignore Captain Stoner, he's a 20-20 poster.

He'll never tell you we should have Drafted or who he likes until 9 months after the fact.

Just ignore him.

Ok, so upgrading the O-line wouldnt make us more likely to succeed?

So I assume that means you would pass on Ziggy Ansah if Jonathan Cooper is on the board this year? :D

I don't blame the Pats for not taking DeCastro at 21 instead of Jones. Not in the least. If he'd lasted till 25, I would have been ecstatic to get him, but I didn't think it would happen. That's the choice you make. I'll take the pass rusher out of 2 comparably ranked prospects. In retrospect, given the value that the Pats got for #62, it's too bad they couldn't have traded up from #48 to 40 and gotten Amini Silatolu in the 2nd round. He started 15 games for Carolina before going on IR this week with a minor wrist injury, and would have stepped in nicely for Brian Waters. Senio Kelemete in the 5th round would have been nice. Both of those guys were favorites of several people on this board, especially OTG. You can get good guards later on. I'll pass on Cooper for Ansah just like I would have passed on DeCastro for Jones, hoping for a Dallas Thomas or Brian Winter a bit later.

Here's a YouTube of Boise ST CB Jamar Taylor updated with his standout performance in the Maaco Bowl against Washington
