Matt Williamson: Pats will be "really involved" in trying to get Mario Williams

Ugh!

Point well taken on the general point on how fleeting the free cap space can be, but I'd just rather not see James Sanders being mentioned as some solution to any of our problems even if temporarily. I hope instead BB drafts a Harrison Smith, George Iloka, Trumaine Johnson or a Brandon Taylor in the 2nd-3rd round.

With Peyton signing with AZ or Denver they're coming here so we'll NEED Sanders

Not meaning to take this 25 page thread off topic too much, but I wouldn't have a problem with Sanders returning for a depth/backup role. Assuming that the main point in his release was the fact that he was making too much at the time, he would be coming a lot cheaper than before.

Considering that he knows the system and atmosphere around the team, I could think of a lot of other players who may be worse fits than Sanders.

I don't think any of us want to see him being forced to start though. The key words would be 'backup,' 'depth,' and 'cheap.'

If CHI is really considered to be the favorites to land Super Mario at this point in time, they would be adding to a pretty ridiculously nasty defense--at least on paper anyway.

They'd also be dealing with the larger salaries of Peppers and M.Williams, to go along with some of the other key components there, such as Briggs and Urlacher. Their defense alone would be taking up quite a bit of the cap, at least I would imagine.

If the gamble paid off, they may be one of the top few defenses in the NFL in many categories.

I don't recall his cut having anything to do with money, but more to do with not being in shape and struggling on the field.

Sorry, I was joking in memory of Sanders' game ending pick of Peyton in his last game in Foxboro

You're killing me man!
Can we get Tebucky back too while we're at it?

Why stop there? I'd bet ya Fred Marion can still play FS better than anybody we threw out there as that position last year. Tim Fox has lost 1/2 step but still might be an upgrade.

Well, we can't totally disregard the cap hit so only if he were to play for a lifetime supply of Touch of Gray.

Moreover, let's point this out: it's not like the Pats have been cheap. They've just spent money on second-tier guys or reclamation guys, hoping to luck out into star production. How much did they spend last year on Ocho and Shaun Ellis, combined? Ten million? A fair gamble, and the contracts were short enough, but for ten million a year, they probably could have a young, in-his-prime stud like Vincent Jackson instead of an older lottery ticket like Ocho.

If memory serves, the Patriots picked up two Pro Bowlers in free agency last year. (Carter & Waters) You seem dissatisfied with that. What, in your opinion, would have been a more reasonable number for them to have gotten?

The non-snarky way of saying that is that you're cherry-picking by naming the least successful FA signings.

You could also say Mark Anderson was a pretty damn good signing!

Oh, I know PWP.

I just brought up the thought about signing Sanders as a possible depth option at a lower salary since you mentioned it. Like I said, I didn't mean to bring up something irrelevant to the thread, but I figured it'd be a good time to mention any thoughts.

If we could just use him on the last drive against the Forehead every time we play, things may work out well

I was under the impression that it was due to his salary cap hit of approx. 3 million or so (off the top of my head). IIRC, at the time many felt that his cap hit did not justify keeping him on board.

I suppose in the absence of actually knowing for a fact what it was, we can assume that it was a combination of not being well enough in shape, struggling on the field at times, and having a cap hit that didn't justify keeping him.
