Matt Williamson: Pats will be "really involved" in trying to get Mario Williams

Besides, the Pats never give a player a new deal with two years left on his deal unless his last name is Brady and his first name is Tom.

Have the Pats given Brady an extension with more than a year left on his deal? I can't remember the terms of the original (first) extension, but I am assuming that due to the success that wasn't expected, they gave him a new deal with more than one yr left.

Out of the 3 times, I know that at least 2 of them (the last 2 deals) had one season left on both.

That would only leave the deal in the beginning of the decade that would have been more than one yr left, but I can't remember the terms.

Latest reports have the Cowboys as the strong front runner for Williams services followed by the Seahawks and all other teams in the distance.

The Cowboys apparently are going to go hogwild in FA and maybe on the level of the moves the 07 Pats made.

Jerry Jones must be losing money,he wants to win and win real badly.

Imagine a front 7 consisting of Mario Williams & Demarcus Ware up front .....going to be a nightmare for DCs to control those 2 from taking over a game.

The Cowboys franchised Anthony Spencer - olb in their 3-4. They should spend the money on secondary help.

They want to get to the second round of the playoffs before Romo throws the season ending pick-6.

They won't need anything more than an average secondary if Spencer,Ware and Williams consist as the big 3 of their front seven, there won't be a lot of time for QBs to find WRs.

A couple of things:

- Solder cannot redo his contract. You cannot redo a rookie contract until after the second year according to the CBA.

- Mayo already got a new deal during last season (a 5 year extension). They are not going to give him a new deal now.

- Odds aren't good that they get a new deal done with either Gronk or Hernandez. I think Hernandez wants to get to free agency because he knows he can be a #1 TE somewhere getting top TE money. I think Gronk knows he can maximize his contract if he waits another year or two. Besides, the Pats never give a player a new deal with two years left on his deal unless his last name is Brady and his first name is Tom.

- I think the Pats will be really active in free agency, but probably not with big names. This is the biggest free agent class in forever. They will probably sign Brandon Lloyd, but he will be the biggest name.

- Of the players you listed, Vollmer and Chung are the ones most likely to get new deals.

Pretty sure the Mayo deal you refer to was done two years before it expired and I also believe the 5 is ontop of those 2 so we have Mayo for 6 more years of 7

Re: Matt Williamson: The Pats will be "really involved" in trying to get Mario Willi

If the salary cap is $121 million for the 2012 NFL Season, the New England Patriots will have roughly $25.067 million to spend on free agency and the 2012 NFL draft.

Numbers in million

$121.0 + $6.667 - $102.6 = $25.067

$5.000 2012 NFL Draft Picks
$9.400 Wes Welker Franchise Tag
$1.927 Brian Hoyer (second round tender - RFA)
$1.925 Deion Branch (minimum player salary plus $1.000 million)
$0.925 Andre Carter (minimum player salary)
$1.825 Cory Redding (minimum player salary plus $1.000 million)
$0.825 Tracy White (minimum player salary)
$0.825 James Sanders (minimum player salary)
$1.700 Dan Connolly (minimum player salary plus $1.000 million)
$0.700 Matt Slater (minimum player salary)
$0.540 Kyle Love (minimum player salary - ERFA)

$25.592 aforementioned subtotal

10 x $0.465 = $4.65 (10 player replacements - one year experience each)

$25.592 - $4.650 = $20.942 subtotal

2 x $0.390 = $0.780 (52nd & 53rd players - rookies)
8 x $0.0969 = $0.775 (8 practice squad players based upon 2011 figures)
$0.000 (injured reserve margin)

$20.942 + $0.780 + $0.775 = $22.497 theoretically spent versus $25.067 available

Please note that this not take into account whether the New England Patriots will re-sign unrestricted free agent running back BenJarvus Green Ellis.

Nicely done Andre, it shows how fast the cap can get chewed up. Without any sensational signings $20M goes fast.

I expect something similar with a least a minimum level of talent at all positions with the draft for filling depth and creating competition.

Although the pure fan in me would love to see Mario Williams worked into the mix.

I think the 5 million for draft picks is being a tad bit over accounted for. That number makes sense when teams don't have 51 players under contract and you're adding their entire salary onto the cap. But Pats have more than 51 players on the roster, so even when accounting for 7 league minimum contracts, that chews up 2.76 million dollars of cap space.

Numbers per NYJETS Cap
(numbers in millions)
Nate Solder-1.94
Shane Vereen-0.786
Steven Ridley-0.671
Ryan Mallet-0.669
Marcus Cannon -0.53
Myron Pyror -0.584
M. Carter-.39
=5.57 million.
5.57-2.76(7 min contracts)= 2.81 added to the cap after the draft

Thats a draft class worth of cap space (and the 5 million dollar number), and a waaaaay overestimated value of what the contracts of rookies would have as all of these players are multiple years into their contracts.

So thats enough extra cap space to sign Mario Williams right leg. Or Andre Cater.

Would LOVE Williams on Pats...but i can see him on Dallas. Him and Ware? wow

Imagine how much success Wilfork, Carter, and Anderson would have with Mario Williams on the other side eating up double teams. Too bad it won't happen.

The Mayo deal was done in late December, when he had like a season and a week left on his rookie deal. That may be when they revisit Gronk or Hernandez, but not before their 3rd season is pretty much in the books.

Re: Matt Williamson: The Pats will be "really involved" in trying to get Mario Willi

There is 4.2mm

Nope. The cap savings is the cap hit saved minus the dead money minus the cap hit of the player who joins the top 51 in that player's place.

The only player there who would actually save the Pats more than $500K is Barrett.

Brady had a year left on his 2000 deal. He had 2 years left on his 2001 deal when they extended him after the third SB. He had a year left on that deal before this extension, but likely would have gotten one a year earlier, his deal was set up for that, absent the ACL. They had to see him come back in 2009 before the could settle on a number, and then they had to decide whether to roll the dice on the lockout. They compromised in a way by giving him $18M on the extension but capping it this time at 4 rather than 5 years. But that is also why he will be prime for another extension in 2013 or 14 that takes him to 2016 or 2017 barring catestrophic injury or falling off a cliff in the interim, of course. And I think the latter doesn't happen absent the former.

So we save
$5.000 2012 NFL Draft Picks (required)

$9.400 Wes Welker Franchise Tag (if the Pats F.O. figures out that they wrap Welker up long term rather than screwing around with this TAG number. What are they thinking?!)

$1.927 Brian Hoyer (second round tender - RFA)-Now we trade him and start the Mallet grooming from here on. We save $1.927m

$1.925 Deion Branch (minimum player salary plus $1.000 million)-We save $1.925 if we don't sign a guy that can be covered by a faster LB. Too bad. Only a backup should be his role.

$0.925 Andre Carter (minimum player salary). Need him

$1.825 Cory Redding (minimum player salary plus $1.000 million)-Your choice and opinion I respect. Decent player. Rather save the $1.825 CAP space for Williams

$0.825 Tracy White (minimum player salary). Need him.

$0.825 James Sanders (minimum player salary). Why? Where would he play? Too expense for bench and he won't play fro that number. Pass in my opinion. We save $.825m

$1.700 Dan Connolly (minimum player salary plus $1.000 million). Need him

$0.700 Matt Slater (minimum player salary). Need him.

$0.540 Kyle Love (minimum player salary - ERFA) Need him.

If we can get Welker under $8mm and save the other $6.4mm you have saved $7.8mm. Is the $3+mm we have left and that enough to sign Mario? No. They need a restructure or two unless Light retires. I believe Barrett is on for $1mm as well. I think they are close enough but will have to fill out the roster with a lot of tier two FAs. Also this Draft class will be important to actually make roster attentive moves.

You can't keep both Koppen and Connolly so you go younger and more versatile.

Mario is exactly what they need but I don't think there is enough space. You have a few more borderline players that will be swapped around but that does not change the CAP number.

If you could, why do this now? The fact is the Team is upper tier every year and that is a credit to BB, but getting a player of the caliber of Williams who is still young and perhaps would be the only defensive player on our roster right now that other Teams OC will have to account for specifically, makes sense.

Remember 2013 the CAP is much larger. You will have to extend a few in 2013 but we should be o.k. There might not be a Mario available in 2013. One or two plays by Mario in the SB and do the Pats win? Who knows but on paper it gives us a better chance.

A lot of his numbers/signings are completely unfounded assumptions. Where did Cory Redding come from, for example? I could see Sanders as a possibility, but there are better options, and including it in a cap analysis now is strange.

Someone also pointed out that the 2011 draft class cost significantly less than $5M.

We have enough space to make the moves we need to make. If you're going to break the bank for someone, then Williams is the guy to do it for. We'll see what happens. There are always other options.

No, the cap goes way up in 2014 when the new TV contracts go in.

I hope against hope wish against wish that Mario is wrecking the field in a Patriots uniform.

Well, let's just see what the Pats do when FA begins March 13. As the famous douchebag Bart Scott once said- "Can't Wait!!"

It was done a year and less than a month. It was done in December of last year almost all the way done with his second to last season. Mayo's rookie contract expired after the 2012 season. It wasn't two full years.

$0.825 James Sanders (minimum player salary)

Ugh!

Point well taken on the general point on how fleeting the free cap space can be, but I'd just rather not see James Sanders being mentioned as some solution to any of our problems even if temporarily. I hope instead BB drafts a Harrison Smith, George Iloka, Trumaine Johnson or a Brandon Taylor in the 2nd-3rd round.
