Light missing media day for "illness"

Perhaps it's because the flu shot is basically useless, particularly for those who are not very young or very old, and can have problematic side effects.

Additionally, it is not going to save you from the generic "stomach bug".

Luckily stomach bugs race right through you. At least they do for me.

Huh, I figured this was just a cover story because he didn't want to be asked about Osi for 2 hours.

Also, Ocho's "Strep Throat" wasn't a serious thing, I am sure he was kidding about it.

It is not 'basically useless' and the side effects are only very mild flu like symptoms the day of the injection. The problem is that epidemiologists have to choose which strains to defend so they pick the four most prevalent strains people have been affected with for that year. While the chances are low, if you get a rare strain that you weren't immunized against, you can still come down with it.

From the CDC:

What are the side effects that could occur?

Soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given
Fever (low grade)
Aches

The intradermal flu shot may cause other additional mild side effects including:

Toughness and itching where the shot was given

If these problems occur, they begin soon after the shot and usually last one to two days.

Can severe problems occur?

Life-threatening allergic reactions are very rare. Signs of serious allergic reaction can include breathing problems, hoarseness or wheezing, hives, paleness, weakness, a fast heartbeat, or dizziness. If they do occur, it is within a few minutes to a few hours after the shot. These reactions are more likely to occur among persons with a severe allergy to eggs, because the viruses used in the influenza vaccine are grown in hens’ eggs. People who have had a severe reaction to eggs or a flu shot in the past should not get a flu shot before seeing a physician.

Guillain-Barré syndrome: Normally, about one person per 100,000 people per year will develop Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), an illness characterized by fever, nerve damage, and muscle weakness. In 1976, vaccination with the swine flu vaccine was associated with getting GBS. Several studies have been done to evaluate if other flu vaccines since 1976 were associated with GBS. Only one of the studies showed an association. That study suggested that one person out of 1 million vaccinated persons may be at risk of GBS associated with the vaccine.

In other words, you can have "life threatening" side effects. Also, it's essentially a useless vaccine, as I noted, particularly for healthy adults (P.S. it's only for 3 strains, not 4). Unless you're old, very young, or sickly, you're better off not getting the vaccine.

Disagree
Flu shots should be given to all players and coaches during the bye week. Any girly men with a "reaction" can recover with minimal risk. Sure the flu virus mutates such that some newly evolved varieties may strike home but there's no excuse for a repeat of the AFCCG flu disaster.

This. Usually when people have the "flu", they don't really have influenza. Unfortunately, they then go and blame a faulty flu vaccine or something like that.

For better or worse, the term "flu" has become a generic term in our lingo.

I tend to react more than experts say I should and even I feel ok in a few days - and their ability to push through stuff is lightyears beyond mine.

What, did you all stay at a holiday in express last night?

They just said on NFLN that he missed practice yesterday, which, although not good news in itself, it means that he didn't just come down with the "illness" today, so he should be over it sooner.

The issue isn't Light -- he'll be fine by gametime. The issue is that this might be presaging the bug doing a slow burn through lots of the team. It's the players who might come down with it Thurs, Fri, Sat, or Sun I'm concerned about.

As long as Light has not been showering shall we say "up close and personal" with lithe, muscular sleek young team mates like Sea Bass and Solder than the infection may have run its course

CDC - Seasonal Influenza (Flu) - Q & A: Seasonal Flu Shot

Yawn. If you're going to quote the first google link you come across, you should at least include the parts that detract from your argument.

A panel of immunization experts voted today (February 24, 2010) to expand the recommendation for annual influenza vaccination to include all people aged 6 months and older. The expanded recommendation is to take effect in the 2010 – 2011 influenza season. The new recommendation seeks to remove barriers to influenza immunization and signals the importance of preventing influenza across the entire population.

I work in healthcare. It is required virtually everywhere as a staff member or student in the field to have one yearly. To quote your own source and based upon my own experience, I imagine the chances of life threatening conditions are the same as someone winning the lottery twice or the Jets establishing a dynasty starting next season since "life threatening" side effects are listed with numerous other commonly administered vaccines.

As some of you know I am in the Air Force, and we are required to get a flu shot every fall. One year there was a mild flu outbreak in NJ where we were stationed and it was before the base had the flu shots/nasal mists for distribution. Both my sons were sick, my wife had it, and I had it. That was the only time since high school I had the flu (15 years).

Circumstantial? Possibly. But if I was running a team AND I went through this before, I'd have them all getting flu shots. One poster suggested every bye week, that sounds like a solid plan. Not a doctor, didn't stay at a Holiday Inn; just giving a semi informed opinion based on my long history of seeing them work pretty damn well.

I hope this is the end of it...as this doesn't make me happy.

Given the way I haven't had a class with 100% attendance since the new year, yeah, there is a lot going around and it is getting around quickly. However, most of my kids who are sick are back within a day or two and are back to "normal"...if there is such a thing for them.

First thing the Pats players should say to the Giants when they walk by during warm ups: "Not only are we going to win this thing today and send you back to New Jersey as losers, but we've all got a stomache bug so you'll go back cr*pping in your pants and then will infect your families."
