Colts shopping Robert Mathis (pats involved)

I don't like the move. I don't think he'd have double digit sacks with the Pats. We can disagree, as clearly you'd like the move. Again, I'd pass.

It's not even getting double digit sacks, its about getting pressure. He would at least be double teamed, and create chances for AH and Wilfork to get one on one. If he isn't, he'll have the same production he had with the Colts.

I'd personally love Mathis here. Seems like a professional guy and he could definately improve this defense.

So what is the source?

And how do the Patriots play into what was said?

Schefter speculating on what he thinks a team should do?? LOL

Would certainly give more legs to the concept of sucking for Luck, or Manning in 2012 for that matter...

with a #3 that's not a bad deal. I say we take a chance.

Mathis to the Pats is never going to happen.

That would be a big FU to Peyton ....to lose a leader on defense and possibly the only true WR as well?

Peyton's odds of winning another SB would seriously drop

Rumors that make you go hmmmm.

If we were still playing a predominantly 3-4 defense I'd be more inclined to agree with you. Now that the Pats play predominantly a 4-3 front, I think Mathis is a fit as a rush end. What reasons do you have that lead you to believe that Mathis would not succeed in the Pats system THIS year?

I think your point is very valid and you can couple that with the fact Mathis would not have Freeney on the other side here and would get more attention.

That being said it is hard not to think its still worth it just for 3rd downs. He would be our best edge rusher.

I think Freeney has a huge impact on Mathis's production. I also think he'd have trouble with the run. He'd also eat up a good portion of what's left of our cap and I believe he's a FA next year. That's a lot to give up for a player to come in part way thru the season. Can we realistically expect him to preform at the same level as he's done with the Colts without training camp and a third of the season already gone? Possibly, but I doubt it. Just my 2 cents worth.

Gonna cost a ton of $ to sign Mathis to a new deal. But hey, it's not my cash. ;)

These are my thoughts as well. He's been in the league 8 years, would have to learn a new system, and would not have Freeney on the other side of him. Not even mentioning he would be our smallest DL by a big margin. I'm not as excited about it as everyone else.

These things are fun to think about but almost never come to fruition.

Just some factual information in response to you voicing your concern over the cap. Mathis has a salary of 2.4m this season. His bonus money only counts against his original team if he gets traded. So the Pats would only have to pay him his remaining salary over the next 10 games. 10/16 x 2.4m = 1.5m left in paychecks in 2011.

Robert Mathis Contract, Salaries, and Transactions

The Pats are very capable of absorbing Mathis' cap number for this year. As far as resigning. That question would only come up later IF he performed very, very well.

It looks like we're in the minority here! He's listed at 6'2, 245 lbs.

Mathis is a pass rushing specialist used to playing on a defense with heavy leads. The Patriots defense plays with leads. I would absolutely jump at this if true. Hell I'd jump at a package deal of Wayne and Mathis if true.

Should be interesting to see if anything eventuates.

i gotta agree, getting mathis excites me

those who state Freeney as a defense should not, when mathis gets 1-on-1 hes a great edge rusher

if he gets double teamed which he is good enough to do so, the other 3 guys will have 1-on-1, and that would include ( i assume) carter, wilfork and albert....those three guys all 1-on-1 is something i would not mind

my only thing is the run stopping, we might get mathis and put him in ONLY on passing downs, otherwise he may be a liability against the run...he would be another anderson type, and hence our pass rush line may include our best rushers (carter, anderson, mathis)

honestly, if this move works out, it would really help out this D, and by the end of the year with improvements it may reach top 10 in the NFL

a top 10 defense with this offense is worthy of a SB berth....whats his contract like?

You know when you see Pats fan swarm like fleas to a pile of sh!t every time someone with even marginal pass rushing ability, all I can think of is an old kids show they had when I was a kid (at the dawn of TV). His name was Big Brother Bob Emery and his theme song was.

"well the grass is always greener in the other fellows yard...."

That being said. Mathis would be a good addition. But I was thinking. With Wright and Pryor both on IR the Pats lost their 2 best interior pass rushers. I like Mathis as much as anyone, but I'd love to see what "interior pass rusher" are out there. That's what we really need. Unfortunately good interior are about as available as great NFL QBs.

So, uncle Bob fire up the uke and....."well the grass is always greener, in the other fellows yard...."

and no need to get Wayne unless he comes at a bargain

btw, im pretty sure this type of trade means that Manning is NOT coming back, colts are going for Luck

I believe his cap is close to 7 million and he'll be a FA next year. So it would be a 3rd rounder for this year.

Not sure I'd give up a 3rd for 1 year of production. If we really want him I'd wait until he hits FA.
