Solder is going to be better than Vollmer. Kid had no off-season, hasn't had the benefit of a pro weight-workout routine, and already looks like he belongs. A year from now we are going to have the best set of bookend tackles in the league. 20 pounds and refined technique and you are looking at a monster.

And thank god for the 2nd half. I bet I wasn't alone when mid way through the 2nd quarter I was worried that Bill was gong to lack enough "coachble points" for tomorrow's Film study

I was with you Ken. Although I'm sure BB would have found something. Someone on the radio this morning said that on the big Woodhead run where he bounced left when the initial hole wasn't there BB will lay into the line about not opening the hole. etc.

I was very confused watching this game. I had read that if Solder started Brady would be injured. Is BB hiding injuries again?

Well, maybe be can all settle down a bit about Solder. Plenty of rookies not as good as he is have started in the NFL for a lot of teams.

Here we go:
I haven't seen a Patriots D get after it like that since.....Willie M spear heading that goal line stand vs Indy years ago. They imposed there will. After too many years of bend /don't break...could this be the year that BB has an '85 Bears like D to go with the high octane offense. Dare to dream.
Last night, we got to witness the beauty of D linemen fighting for roster spots. G Warren....who was that guy last night? He went from a space absorbing load last year to a meat eating pit bull last night. Big Vince...how can a guy so big be so light on his feet. This D has to be fun for him and the rest of the big boys. Think about how games progressed last year. For the most part, Pats get the lead....Opposition starts picking away through the air while the front 7 plays lock up. I hated it....just hated it. If this D can sustain pressure throuhout the season, teams will need to go into max protection more often...and the secondary will have more double coverage and that 3rd down % will crash to Earth.
Mayo....he will be in the Defensive Player of the Year discussion. Book it now. BB knows what he has ....smart player that will be given free reign to move around....LT? In two paragraghs I've tossed about the "85 Bears and LT....yeah...I like what I'm seeing.
Solder...the inside move has been his achilles....but his crazy athleticism will make the running game really tick. Did you see him pulling last night...Huge guy, light on his feet, seeling off the defender. Add Gronk to the huge white guys that can pull squad. In fact, that triple TE alignment will mess up D coordinators brains every week "What the Fu** are they up to...Power Sweep? Pulling up the middle? Jail Break pass pattern. Brady will read it... and this will be fun.
Depth: Its nuts. Their entire 2011 draft was for depth...for now. What team has that luxory. And BB gets to double down in the draft next year as well. Remarkable how BB runs this team. I shake my head in amazement how this organization operates. 53 moving parts...pulled together by our Hoodie. Walsh and BB....and then the rest. Not even close.
We are lucky.......now lets stay healthy and see this through

Borgy, this is the "smug" part I was talking about. As you and many others were last night, I was thrilled with the way the defense DOMINATED a pretty good TB team. BUT.....and there is always a BUT in these things....its NOT always going to be like that. This was new. And like anything new, its generally going to work. But the NFL is filled with very competent professionals who are going to start to break this down. And then things will start to get harder. They also had the advantage of playing a team that had only 3 weeks of practice and didn't game plan us

So while it was very exciting to see the Pats do a remake of the 85 Bears, its way too early to think its going to be like that all season. BTW - the thing I most liked about the defense was how many of the up front pieces were so interchangeable without any loss of effectiveness.

Well it looks so far that the Pats have are 3-4 with the 7 picks hat matter. Solder, Ridley and Mallet, have all, to various degrees, exceeded expectations. Smith hasn't, but the Yeatman pick up, makes up for it, and its still early. Now the rest of the draft is an incomplete until we finally see Vareen and Dowling. But even if those guys are complete bust, which is VERY unlikely, this draft looks like another winner.

I would agree. I'm excited to see these two guys finally get on the field. It's a bit frustrating, but luckily we don't need them. This offensive line is set up to be GREAT in the coming years especially if Cannon can play well at RG and they grab a C in next year's draft. Koppen still has some years left.

Koppen or Samuel ight? Getting pro bowl players late in the draft is just remarkable.

That's the interesting part. "Best draft picks" isn't necessarily the same as "best players drafted"! Draft position puts guys like Hernandez & Vollmer in the running, and maybe Gronkowski too. And how about that 7th-round QB who did strong service as a backup then was flipped for a 2nd?

All good points PC, but from all the draft picks from the BB era, Brady and Seymour are the only two that could be HOFers....at this point. In my excitement of what I saw from him last night, I went out on the limb and speculated that Solder was in that category. Think of it as youthful exuberance. BTW if Gronk is lucky and healthy enough to have a 10+ year NFL career, he two could be a HOFer.

Solder is far and away the skinniest 318 lb man I have ever seen.

Vollmer and Solder are missing the traditional "OL belly." This is a good thing, because muscle is more dense than fat.

Interesting fact from the Denver Post:

Now, for the numbers within the numbers: During his tight end days, his body fat registered as low as 2 percent, the stuff of runway models. It hovered around 5 or 6 percent as he piled on weight but never got above 10. As of today, it's at 8 percent, well below the 25 percent limit mandated for CU's offensive linemen. In other words, he could get a lot bigger.

First I did not call YOU smug. Here's were the reading comprehension comes in. In my original post I warned all Pats fans, including myself not to be too "smug" about the results of we saw last night, and then gave the reasons. i know this might be hard for you to believe, but the "smug" remark had NOTHING to do with you.

Secondly where I grew up in my neighborhood, we often added a "y" to a name when talking to some to add a sense of familiarity . So Jim became Jimmy. Frank became Franky. Smith became Smitty. Borg became.... Are you getting it. Am I going to fast for you. So when I called you Borgy it wasn't pejorative I have added the "y" with many other posters over the years, I can't believe that you thought it was an was a personal attack

The amazing thing is that for all the talk of how Solder is too skinny and they have to bulk him up to play in the NFL, he actually weighs more than most top OT prospects -- more than Jake Long, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Russell Okung, Ryan Clady, Michael Oher, etc. etc. Yeah, he's the tallest of the bunch, but not by much. He just wears the weight effortlessly.

Yeah, that's why I really wanna see Solder get up to 340 or so. Even most elite tackles can't carry the extra weight, but Solder is such an elite athlete at that position. Even at that weight, he'd still easily be more athletic than Light is right now, and he'd be one BAMF of a run blocker too. Maneri can give him eating lessons
