TBC informed he will be released

Wrong Thread.. This belongs in the UDFA Signings thread.

I posted their 1st w/ this stuff Bruinz... I figured this was a good spot as well.

how can we release an injured player guys?

Good move by the Pats. No one else will bother with Tully while he heals, and I'll bet the Patriots bring him back mid-season (if they need him).

According to that same page, it means we paid him $7 mil for 1 so-so year. Which is about half of what Julius Peppers got from the Bears.

True. Although the year before we got 10 sacks from him on a 1 year, nearly minimum salary contract.

I've been a fan of TBC in the past, however he just doesn't seem very committed lately with the West Coast training and the talk of his future music career. I'm sure the injury didn't help. With no cap savings and lack of OLB's, BB must feel has nothing to contribute.

The good news is last year was a career year for all 3 !

Nink had a career high 4 sacks.
Moore had a career high 2 sacks.
and Rookie Cunningham had 1 sack !

There is someone big coming aboard. Has to be.

While I'm thinking this to be the case as well (maybe not big but at least something half-decent to replace TBC), we won't be holding our breath.

We've seen this play out before:
Enter Monty Beisel, OLB edition: The second coming of JAG mediocrity.

TBC and kaczur are just taking up space. I'm glad for this as it means that the pats' front office sees what I see! TBC wasn't very good!

We can all collectively sing Good Riddance.
However, this guy was a JAG, on a team where a JAG is an upgrade.

The Pats passed on what Belichick referred to as the depth of the draft, the DE/OLB corps. There are limited options in free agency. Hopefully the Pats pounce.

Many will bring up Tito's quote about left fielders last year. Every year the Red Sox have started a player in left field, and we probably will again this year. With a team this strong, we all hope the Patriots upgrade at this critical spot. I'm not comfortable today swapping Markell Carter for Tully Banta-Cain, based on last year's third-down performance.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but had they released him in March instead of now, they would have freed up an extra $2m in cap space this year.

Non Football injury..

Not sure how this works but it likely hinges on his post season medical. He claimed it was a lingering injury from last season.

Would have saved an additional $2M against the cap if we'd released him back in March, but OTOH this is probably directly because of his injury/surgery. Bummer either way, though, for all of the flak that he takes here I actually like the guy. Have a bit of a soft spot for 7th rounders who turn into solid players.

If the Patriots can't find someone to do TBC's job better during camp they can just resign him to a minimum deal when he is fully recovered. I can't imagine he will garner much interest in free agency, I see this as a no lose situation. The only thing that sucks is they didn't do this last year, they would have saved 4.5M instead of just 1.9M.

Well, as of now, there is little risk the Patriots are overpaying any of their OLB's. With the release of TBC, the Patriots highest-paid OLB would be making 10% of last year's cost of their highest-paid player. Or about 1/20th the cost of Julius Peppers.

After the era of McGinest, Vrabel, Colvin, and Thomas, that's amazing.

How would the Pats have saved 4.5 million off the cap instead of just 1.85 million?

Could cut him with an injury settlement a la Tory Holt

As part of the new CBA, dead cap money is not carried over from anyone who was released before March 11th. That would have avoided TBC's $2M cap hit for being cut.

But that wasn't known then!

Do you have a link for that? I ask because I've only heard it mentioned on here and not seen any actual links for it..

Thanks in advance.

Tell me about it- seems like it was a bone that was thrown to the Jets to keep them competitive, since it conveniently lets them shed a ton of dead cap money (mainly Gholston and Jenkins). Every team should have a one-day amnesty or so to cut guys without creating dead space, to make it even.
