Bodden, Warren and McGowan should all be back next year. Remember that McGowan was an excellent run stopper/in the box type guy last year and could spell Chung if and when he comes back

I think Santonio Brown might displace McGowan next year

Although its Chungs second season i always feel better when hes in the line up!

He plays hard every game and every down. and he knows how to tackle properly and not just attempt a big highlight hit (merriweather) everytime!

I think some of you guys are a bit out of date on emphasizing the supposed differences between strong safety and weak safety. That's more of a throw-back to 20+ years ago, before formation shifting and wide open passing attacks became the norm.

Similar to how there no longer is much difference between strong side and weak side linebackers, because if the TE moves, the LBs don't necessarily switch spots, so the guy who was the Sam is now the Wil, the interchangeability and flexibility of safeties is a necessary part of the defense in the new millenium.

This isn't to say, of course, that different players don't bring different styles to the table, and that PLayer A may play more of a strong safety type of role, and then be subbed out on passing downs. But to act like you can't really compare two safeties because they have very fundamental roles is to really overstate things.

Do you mean that current player "Sergio Brown" won't be replaced by Belichick signing free agent McGowan to replace him on the roster?

I HOPE McG is kept over Sanders.

i know that this is a team game, but seeing the difference in the defense this week and last week and knowing Chung played this week and not last week makes me feel much better about the defense as long as he can stay healthy.

chung has a rating of 87 on madden and at the beginning of the year i thought that was too generous, but now i completely agree with it. i know that its just madden and not real, i was jus sayin.

I like the sentiment, but Rodney never had that kind of speed. Chung is a special player, and if he stays healthy he'll become of of the best safeties in the league, maybe of all time.

okay, okay....love the enthusiasam....but you are getting WAY ahead of yourself here. Chung has a long way to go in his coverage skills before you can say he will be one of the best safties in the league - won't even touch that "all time" prediction.

Why do you think keeping the lesser player is a good idea?

Here's an attempt at figuring out what we have next season.

Patrick Chung - undisputed #1. Playmaker, monster playing downhill, gives the defense its identity. A fundamental tackler first and a huge hitter second, which is rare nowadays. Improving weekly.

Brandon Meriweather - Good center fielder, can close fast on other people's assignments. Makes mental mistakes too often. Has improved his tackling, but still takes some bad angles.

James Sanders - Solid, disciplined player who doesn't make mental mistakes, but has limited instincts and athleticism. Doesn't commit PI type penalties often. Vet presence.

Brandon McGowan - Strong in run support, strong on ST, big hitter, very physical with tight ends. Seems to struggle with wide receivers and zone concepts. Misses tackles too often when he goes for the killshot.

Jarrad Page - Small sample size makes him look like a solid all-around safety. Built more like McGowan than Sanders, but has better coverage skills.

Sergio Brown - Great on ST, has shown solid coverage and tackling skills. Could make someone else expendable, especially if he improves.

Josh Barrett - Dark horse candidate. Shrouded in mystery.

Bret Lockett - Looked like a total JAG early on. Journeyman who probably has no future here.
