Not to be a contrarian, but look at the teams San Diego's D has faced. KC, Jax, Ari, Oak, Sea, StL. Any of those teams have a really potent aerial offense? Sam Bradford was arguably the best QB they've faced this season.

The D's numbers are dubious at best.

Good point. Didn't realize they were allowed to start their season by playing the WAC.

Clark Judge points this out:

OK, I'm worried about -- no, make that annoyed, infuriated and downright disgusted with -- San Diego, and it's not just because the Chargers are 2-4 against a soft schedule. It's because they haven't played a quarterback of consequence yet, and you can look it up: Of the six clubs they faced none ranked higher than 17th in passing prior to Sunday. Worse, of the six quarterbacks they faced, none ranked higher than Jacksonville's David Garrard at 13th, and he had four interceptions against them. The next best? Try Jason Campbell at 24th. Honest. Now comes the hard part, San Diego. Tom Brady is next on the schedule, and, yeah, I'd say he qualifies as someone of consequence.

Face QBs like these, if they weren't at least the #2 or #3 pass defense, they might be one of the worse passing defenses in the league.

This is gonna be a tough game even if they dont play with antonio gates. Its a road game and chargers will be hungry for a win.The offense will need to be more consistent on drives.I thought the game in miami was very deceiving. The offense didnt exactly played that great. It was about special teams.

I agree with you, but something is certain, there is nothing SPECIAL about the Chargers special teams. In fact, they make Miami's special teams look pretty good. This should be a big advantage in NE's direction.

Their offense is amazing, but their passing defense isn't that good. They just haven't faced a single high powered offense thus far.

The Pats special teams are salivating. Seattle's Washington scored twice on kick-offs against the Chargers. The Raiders blocked two punts in their win and yesterday, there was at least one blocked kick against the Rams.
Maybe we can cause another coaching dismissal.

I take the Pats and the points....

SD a turf field or real grass?

the type of surface is my only question mark:)

pats have faced better teams but this might be the best QB and offense our D will face so far too i think...and we know what the other qbs < rivers did to us ...so goes both ways

Good data. I saw that third down conversion when I was looking them up earlier today. Not good for a team that is 1st in total yards.

I new their punt team was bad but...wow. But I remember when our punt stats were terrible. I love me some Zoltan, I am even willing to overlook his two shanks, chaulk them up to being a rookie. But we lose that game yesterday if Walters is punting from the 1.

they may be bad 3rd down coversion team but did you see our D for 3 quarters on 3rd down ? i think we rank 32 there so something has to give..

Good point, we've been terrible on 3rd downs defensively, well until the 4th quarter yesterday.

A few weeks back I posted areas in which we needed to see improvements in order for us to be a good defensive football team by the end of the season. And 3rd down was definitely one of them. Hopefully the 4th quarter yesterday was not an aberration.

We've already seen improvements in rushing the passer, turnovers, red zone defense and stopping the run inside the tackles. Yesterday we did a great job on stopping the run all together and started to get 3 and outs. At this point small steps forward in one or two areas per game is all we can really ask of them, and to their credit the defense is improving each week.

I heard they're even better on the road

I want to come out and say that I think we'll blow them out of the water in their own house, but I can't do it. San Diego is always a tough test for us. Not to mention, we're going across the country to play in Qualcomm, an environment that always seems to get up for the Pats ever since we stole the Divisional playoff game from them in '06. I suspect we'll come out on top, but I don't think it's going to be easy.

trap game....

Norv Turner and Wade Phillips will never win a championship even if their entire roster was filled with pro bowlers.

This stat of the Chargers having the best offense and defense is a perfect example of how a team can be completely loaded talent-wise and look good in terms of league stats, but the coaching just completely derails the team.

The same thing is happening with the Dallas Cowboys. Their offense and defense are both rated top 3 in the league, but they have 1 win.

The Patriots USED to be like this (up until last week), where we'd have an offense and defense that was ranked top 5, but all the fans knew the team choked in the 2nd half and couldn't do anything in the big moment.

Wow! I really underestimated our 2010 D. Offense too.

Look who they have faced ...... If they were anything, they'd be 6-0

The reason isn't hard to figure, they give up quick ST scores, this keeps the defense rested on the bench. Their offense can drive down but isn't a scoring machine, they are also prone to turn it over and give their d short field.

So they are playing weak offenses, giving up scores on ST before the defense can and those quick scores allows Rivers to keep padding stats. They are the opposite of us who have great special teams but are always stuck on defense while the offense waits.

At the end of the day I will take our 30 ppg.

In other news, I got banned from the Chargers forums. This is the reason...

You have been banned for the following reason:
Your "location" has earned you a permanent vacation from the CMB

Date the ban will be lifted: Never

My location was: "Your mother's ass". That has been my location on there for two years. My two posts on there included calling LT classy for smiling when asked if he felt good about the Chargers' troubles, and one post saying how this isn't going to be an easy game for the Pats. If JC Davey reads this, I want to know: whassupwitdat?

people who think this game is going to be a walk are insane.

they've been a horrible road team but they're averaging wins by 28 points at home. couple that with the well documented problems with the patriots on the road (no special teams explosion in Miami and that's a different game).

it's probably good that Gates will be out for that game, but I think the Pats could lose big in this one if they're not careful. With the Steelers, Vikings, and Indy coming up in the four games after next weekend, a road win will be somewhat big. The Chargers always gun for beating the Pats, and after losing to StL they're going to be on fire, I think.

Pats are going to have to score points to win this one, on the order of 28 I think.

I agree. Not only do the Pats need to score at least 28 to win, but they're going to have to take advantage of SD's weaknesses on STs & Turnovers in order to score those 28+ points. I don't think we can win without big plays, because SD will more often than not win the battles at both sides of the LOS.
