If you had a chance, what would you ask Belichick about the Moss trade?

Me personally, I'd ask Bill if he thought he got fair value for Moss. I personally think it was a bad trade. The Pats basically gave him away for nothing. How many 3rd round picks make impacts in the NFL ? Moss may be making an impact in the NFL for the next 3-5 years. Obviously Belichick would tell me he got what he wanted, but I don't think it was nearly enough. We ripped off the Raiders by trading a 4th round pick for Moss, the Vikings basically did the same thing to us. Maybe this is just a 3/4 year rental, but if they sign him long term, then we got beat in this trade.

Why it took so long...

Re: If you had a chance, what would you ask Belichick about the Moss trade ?

Why he didn't fire his play caller before it caused all of this nonesense.

i dont mind the deal. but as we saw when we were attempting to trade cassel, you shouldnt rush to decisions. after we made the deal we learned we couldve gotten a 1st round pick for cassel (or cutler who we would easily be able to get a first rounder for). so my question is, did we rush trading moss to the vikings? could we have gotten more if we waited a little while longer and heard other offers?

thats what id ask

What exactly did you expect to get? How many players at his age get more in a trade, no matter how talented he may be?

I'm a bit down that he's gone but after hearing what Bruschi had to say about what was happening in the locker room, I can't see how people are still so furious about this.

I'd ask if he has been drinking or if Al Davis advised him to trade Moss. Or I may just punch him in the nose.

Have you been paying any attention to reports of WHY he was traded? BB got what he could when he could. Otherwise, he eventually would've been released and the Pats would have nothing.

Re: If you had a chance, what would you ask Belichick about the Moss trade ?

I'd ask him what happened. I want to know from his perspective the type of issues Moss caused.

Re: If you had a chance, what would you ask Belichick about the Moss trade ?

How about this: why didn't he do this prior to the draft last spring?

Did he sit down and talk to Randy about the team's plans with him, the CBA, etc., and let him know where the team stood, and get a feel for where Randy was at when the '09 season ended? If not, why not; did he feel from previous discussions it would not be an issue? At what point did it become an issue, and what was the tipping point?

Unfortunately we won't get any of those answers until after Belichick retires and agrees to have the next Halberstam write his biography.

I think we are all asking the same question, but in different ways. My question would be what was the final straw?

Re: If you had a chance, what would you ask Belichick about the Moss trade ?

I would ask BB if Wilfork came in tomorrow and asked for a trade, would we give him up for whatever we could get?

I'm a little disappointed that we got a 3, because that'll take until the '12 draft to become a 1.

In all seriousness, he might have been able to get more value out of this, because his desire to be rid of Moss could not be greater than the Vikings' need to get him.

On the plus side: you put Randy on the field against the Jets one more time. You get him to a team he wants to play for. You part on relatively good terms. You aren't on the hook for the long-term deal or for the remainder of this year's salary. Of course (if I've got this right,) there aren't cap implications until/unless the next CBA (I've been out of tracking this side of things for a long time and trust I'll be corrected if this isn't the case.) But then, the next CBA could be signed the day after the season ends, and it might be just as inflexible in terms of the cap.

The first event leading to this directly was The Interview, when Moss said originally that it didn't look like he'd be with the team next year. Then came The Tirade, when he wanted to let us know up front he'd be a dbag later in the year - something like that. Then the blow-up with the coaching staff.

So I understand it's business, and hell, he's got a right to get out there and get paid. The Pats obviously even thought the best solution would be to let him out early to do it, and get a 3 out of it instead of a big goose egg.

I think it's just a matter of getting it out of the way early, getting what you can, putting him on the field against your divisional rival, and trusting the other weapons that so far are panning out quite well (Tate/Hernandez/Gronk... even Woodhouse.) There's downside risk in keeping him, there's downside risk in cutting him loose.

Question: how do you feel about it if the Pats win a division, go deep into the playoffs, then blow the AFCG or the SB in a game when Moss is a non-factor, for whatever reason... given his statements this year?

He was ready to go. The Pats were ready to let him go. Love the guy, and may he score many a touchdown elsewhere... just not against us.

Re: If you had a chance, what would you ask Belichick about the Moss trade ?

I would ask Bill if it was a 'straight trade homie' ...

Re: If you had a chance, what would you ask Belichick about the Moss trade ?

Analysts said that Randy Moss was beginning to decline physically. He had 3 touchdowns in 4 games. All the other receivers have 4 total. Moss creates a change in every defensive scheme, causing a double coverage and coverage of the deep route. Why do you think Wes would be open on short routes. Franky, Moss created an irreplaceable element on the Patriots offense. Randy Moss will be missed. However, we have 2 weeks to formulate a new offense. The Dolphins game was awesome. Go Pats!

This!

As others have mentioned, I question why BB did not anticipate a potential meltdown knowing he was not gonna offer Moss a long term contract before the season? Knowing Moss' fragile personality, why not do a trade pre draft? BB was already on a mission to purge troublesome personalities from the team.

The management errors the Pats have made typically involve reacting a little late to the situation, placing themselves in situations where their options are severely constricted, q.v. Branch, Asante and now Moss. It's a pattern and probably going to continue. Fortunately, Wilfork's and Brady's contracts are done.

Excellent questions. I don't expect to live to see the answers.

Randy Moss was on track for 36 receptions and 12 TDs.

Last season he had 83 receptions and 13 TDs.

Traded Moss = -9 TDs

Welker is on track for 12 TDs, he had 4 in 2009: +8
Special Teams have 3 TDs, 0 in 2009: +3
Tight Ends in 2009, 7 TDs, Gronkowski is on track for 8: +1

NE projects to make up those lost Moss TDs, and I'm betting Hernandez (18 rec) and Tate (11 rec) can get closer to 83 receptions than Randy was going to.

The more I think about it and take emotion out of it the more I realize the Patriots don't make this move unless they are confident in the side moving forward.

Re: If you had a chance, what would you ask Belichick about the Moss trade ?

If I had a chance to ask BB questions it would be far down the list.

Good post. I'm looking forward to the offense being less predictable. I'm looking forward to Brady's favorite receiver being the open one. Those 03 and 04 offenses were hard to gameplan because they didn't know if we were running or who we were passing to. I'm not drinking no kool aid, I've felt that way for months now. Extremely so after the Jets game.

Re: If you had a chance, what would you ask Belichick about the Moss trade ?

I'd ask him to what extent he took responsibility for why the situation got to the point where he had to make what is obviously a very bad deal.

I'd then ask him to what extent O'Brien and the Patriots top management shared that responsibility.
