Christopher Gasper hates the Patriots

Her induction in and of itself says something about non-players in the Hall of Fame. Jackie MacMullen? Halfway decent is not a bad description of her sports writing skills. What did she transend? When you think Jackie MacMullen, do you think NBA? I get Peter Vecsey. Jackie MacMullen - just your run of the mill filler writer. You get in the Hall of Fame for that?

And no, Gasper doesn't hate the Patriots. There is a requirement for Boston Sportswriters to be a **** in at least two out of five articles.

You are dead wrong on Jackie M. Forget about the whole one of the first female beat writers in the locker room stuff. She is a fantastic journalist and very knowledgeable about the league and the history of hoops.

I'd like to think I know a little about basketball (played HS and College) and I took exception to her bum-kissing of Antoine walker (I hated his game). I emailed her and debated his actual worth to the team and overall game. Jackie responded and went back and forth over mail and she held her ground.

If LB and Magic respect her ability to deliver a story that they wanted written for posterity's sake, that speaks volumes IMO.

Spot on. I disagree with a lot of Jackie's opinions, but she is no doubt a talented writer and seems to really care about the sports she follows and writes about.

The Moss comment is just weird. I said before, during, and after the Celtics-Cavs game 6 that Lebron was going to pull a PEYTON and not show up under playoff pressure, just like old Brickyard*

* Brickyard= Peyton's new nickname, since he is 8-8 in the playoffs, or "The Indy 0.500 quarterback"

And MacMullin, Ryan, McDonough, Gammons, Bud Collins et. al. are/were great writers from Boston. Y'all are SPOILED.

Boston area fans can't bag on Bron-Bron too much anymore. The Bruins just borrowed the Peyton Manning Memorial Gaspipe.

Still underwhelmed with her. Your defense is that she is a female and you had an email relationship. She "held her ground" with you over email? Wow. Some criteria. You have your book and I have mine. She's run of the mill in mine. Just your average professional writer. There was never a population of people waiting to read what she wrote. "What does MacMullen think?" You'd be better off asking the Celtics GM at the time. God this brings back bad memories. I remember her waxing on for the return of John Bagley. Yes, John Bagley who I don't think ever played again. If she is in the Hall of Fame, everyone should be. Really, nothing special.

And Gasper doesn't hate the Patriots.

No. That is not my defense. Shes been covering the NBA beat for 30+ years and has a ton of respect of her peers and the greatest players ever. Just because shes not JK Rowling doesn't mean she is a run of the mill writer.

When I say she held her ground, she pointed out things that AW did that the average schmoe fan like you and I wouldn't even think of. Her basketball knowledge is outstanding.

John Bagley was a decent backup PG who ran the offense. Whats wrong with saying that he was decent pickup?

I don't think Gasper hates the Pats either. Hes being contrarian on purpose to boost his media play.

Felger loves the guy so you know he is a Patriots hater and does not know what he is talking about. And he is a douche.

It's an indication of the state of sports journalism when knowing your sport makes you special.

Regarding Bags - she said something to the effect of the Celts would have won 8 more games if he was their guard. His time was already up with the Celts and he was out of work. I believe she was also an expert in the unseen talents of Fred Roberts.

Regardless of specific complaints, her big picture is standard stuff. Again - I get Vescy. When I think Vescy, I think NBA. When I think MacMillan, I think professional sports writer. Nothing special, unless knowing your job makes you special.

And Gasper still doesn't hate the Patriots.

ps. re: your JK Rowling reference: I just finished my 1st Harry Potter book. Odd or not, I'm now on "Bill Walton" by Jack Scott. So now, my wishes are to get a teaching job at Hogwarts and to hang out in Bill's house.

Ehhh..... I played basketball with Bagley while he was getting himself back into shape. The Celtics certainly could have used him.

In a shocking upset, we have the Number 1 Deus Irae Post of All Time!

Perhaps. I think JM was fortunate that she came into the Globe with great writers which forced her to raise her game which made her a success. I agree, though, it is increasing difficult to find writers who "know" the sport. Anway we've beaten the JM debate to death.

Fred Roberts.......could not stand that guy.

Vescy is outstanding. I would put Jackie a slight tier below him Except his hair plugs God awful.

Let me know how BW is. Looking for another good sports book.

Huh? Major disconnect here. Must be the volcanic ash. So columnists can have OPINIONS and say what they wish with very little validity or support to their argument but a fan cannot?

No problem with a fan not liking a columnists or a reporter, but when it turns to threats and personal attacks then it's going to far.

Argue their points but don't pretend that you know what type of man they are. You don't.

Well he's obviously the type of man that runs with a BS story with no corroborating evidence. He's the type of man that writes stories that his newspaper later has to apologize for. He's the type of man that wants to be bigger than the story and doesn't care who he tramples along the way. He's the type of man despised by most loyal Pats fans. He's the type of man that sucks at his job.

He's the type of man that should find a friggin gym and drop 50 lbs of ugly flab, not counting above the neck.

You're the type of man that defends pieces of crap.

PS - who the hell threatened him?

First, if I remember correctly in several losses this season Brady was the first to take the blame for the loss. Brady is not pointing the finger at others without pointing the blame directly at himself. I know Brady took the blame for the Denver loss.

Second, what Brady was talking about was an issue with this team for all or a large part of the season and not individual games. Yes, there were individual games where a large portion of the blame fell on his shoulders, but it was clear that there was an overall team problem for large portion of the year.

Third, Gasper is wrong. From what it is reported in this thread, he is trying to paint Brady as some kind of hypocrite who is trying to throw his teammates under the bus to deflect blame from him. Brady has no problem putting the blame on his shoulders and has even done it to deflect blame from his teammates. He is just talking about a culture change that desperately needed for the team. If Brady wasn't able to take blame himself for losses, it would be one thing. But Brady doesn't do that.

Brady has no problem taking blame for his mistakes. That wasn't what he is talking about. He is talking culture issues that need to be addressed.

PERFECT.

So Jarvis Green could have been Richard Seymour if he'd just listened to the coach more?

Fred Taylor should just have heeded Belichick's parting words of "don't get hurt", and all would have been well?

Man, if the 31 other teams ever catch on to this brilliance, the league will be absolutely full of awesome teams. Maybe Henne should just listen to coach Sporano when he says "Be better than Tom Brady", and the Dolphins will be unstoppable.

Prior to Brady's interview, who knew that all turnovers were strictly the result of not listening to the head coach? Well, the secret is out now......

Don't you have a Blog to write, Chris?

*If anyone's wondering: They're talking about that filthy lump of excrement; Tomase.

Great thread, so interesting to see the range of opinions here, a major reason why I enjoy this forum so much.

On Gasper, I'm on the side that says he isn't a hater, but is taking a position in a strong way to further his career. It's annoying as all hell, but I get it and don't hold it against the guy personally.

On McDonough, say what you want about him good or bad, and I said it myself about him (both good and bad) too often to remember, but his Saturday notes column was must reading for me for a good long time, jam-packed with stuff noone had and much more often than not, right on the money. It is what I remember him for best, and is something I don't think I'll ever see the likes of again in the Internet age (geez I feel old writing this).

don't worry about it...there's plenty of old dogs like me here that remember what you're talking about.

this new "breed" typified by Gasper et al make me want to vomit. They are nothing like the vituperative Boston media of years past because they have ZERO emotional investment in the teams, the fans or the region...they are just young guns fresh out of college looking to make a name for themselves and further their careers and if they have to slash and burn any team, player or fanbase that gets in their way, they will. That's fine and dandy but then don't complain when the fanbase turns on you and wants to rip your small minded , selfish, "all about me first" world apart.
