Sirius Radio says Bodden still in Houston, could sign a deal later today

Robinson's 6y/$57m carries an annual-average of $9.5m w/ a $25.5m signing bonus.

My thinking is that Bodden will get less than that, but not 1/2 less.

You have to look at the contract itself to make that determination. I could easily show how a $10 million a year contract is in reality a $4 year contract averaging $7 million a year.

If you guarantee the salaries in the first 3 or 4 years then you can easily get to that 25 million guaranteed number while paying out $15 million a year on the last 2 years.

It'll be all Bodden's fault. He'll be overpaid, ungrateful and a malcontent.

Well, considering you felt he was closer to not making the roster than panning out as a starter when he arrived here... Hindsight is always 20/20...

I hope Darius Butler has grown up quickly,We are going to need a pretty good season from him and he will most likely be a full timer this season, especially for certain if Bodden leaves.

If a high 2nd cant be ready by year 2---when he has a healthy and full rookie year---then something is wrong. I dont we take a bigger risk than many teams take at many positions by needing to rely on Butler in 2010.

There is still a glimmer of hope in NE regarding Leigh....

Bodden has just designed a brand new,not quite yet ready website of his own, just like Butler did a few days ago, but still under construction but the good news is on the front cover it shows Bodden in a Pats uniform :)

Actually, I said that we didn't know what he'd do because he'd struggled in Detroit and they'd canned him despite having just given him a new contract.

Apparently, you think your ability to read minds extends even beyond all your posts about what Belichick and company are thinking.

Exactly -- this was Bodden's plan all along, and he was pretty open about it:

1) Get out of the black hole known as the Detroit Lions
2) Avoid longer-term deals and include language to restrict tag usage
3) Sign a cap-friendly one-year deal with a playoff-bound team historically known for defense -- i.e. Patriots
4) Play hard that year and create interview reel for next job
5) Explore free market and sign with best option for the player. Could be with Patriots, but in no way guaranteed.

Give Bodden credit -- he followed his plan to a T, and things more or less worked out for him.

However, there's no way Belichick and company have been banking all of their long-term CB hopes on a guy who comes in the door insisting on a one-year, no-tag deal. Bodden's departure, if it does happen, was at least a highly anticipated outcome.
Exactly, I was just about to say something similar. While you can't accuse the Pats of dropping the ball by not tagging Bodden, they should have expected that there was a very high chance that he would not be back in 2010. Perhaps they did indeed anticipate that and do have a plan in place. Even though it's only a few days into free agency though, I don't see what that plan for staffing the cornerback position is if Bodden signs elsewhere.

Re: Sirius Radio says Bodden still in Houston, could sign a deal later today

he's not worth 8M

In an uncapped environment what's the difference between a
5 year/40 million deal with 8 million yearly
5 year/40 million deal with 12 million year 1 and 7 million for final 4

I'm baffled at the blindness of what is happening if the Pats let Bodden leave. He is the best corner on the team. Losing him makes the Pats worse. The Patriots are in the top 3 in NFL revenue on a yearly basis. We pay out our asses for season tickets. If they decide that they can't afford Bodden even without a cap do I get to ask for a reduction in my season ticket costs? How about not charging me $40 to park. This isn't the Jacksonville Jaguars with half attendance. We pay good money and the Pats benefit from it at a high rate monetarily. Without a cap it is not acceptable to lose key players off your team for what might be $4-6 million more up front money.

According to my sources, the Texans lowered their offer to $675,000 per year. The Patriots then lowered their offer to $430,000. The Texans finally signed him at $166,000. Bodden has signed a 6-year deal worth approximately $900,000, with $860,000 coming in the final year, and a $6,000 bonus if Bodden wins league MVP more than four times. The Patriots thought it was a little too high, although they would have loved to have had Bodden back.

Do you think that as an NFL team, their operating costs have gone up?

Kraft himself said that he has no other businesses where 40% of his revenue goes to player salaries.

No question the Pats are making money, but they are in the top 10 in the outlay of cash to players.

Every good business has a budget. Should the Pats not have one?

Will nothing but Super Bowls satisfy your own personal issue with the team?

Hahaha. If he signs with the Texans I can't wait for the sheep to come out defending the move. "He wasn't that good." "He's not worth the money." Yet if the Red Sox did the same without a cap in place (Jason Bay) all hell breaks loose.

I think a team that is in the top 3 in revenue should be in the top 3 in total salary if there is no cap. Right now they are playing with MLB rules. I'm not saying they need to be the Yankees and get every FA but losing important pieces off a team you hope will compete is bad news.

This is also speculative. He hasn't signed anything yet thankfully.

As long as we get a real pass rush, this loss is not as big as it seems. HOWEVER, if a legit pass rusher doesn't emerge or we can't scheme a good pass rush, then we're gonna be in trouble against teams with a competent QB.

The Patriots have a privately financed stadium. That makes a difference.

A pass rush would be nice but no matter how good your pass rush is,there are going to be times and games where your pass rush is outdone by the oppositions OL so you still need a bonafide secondary to win games for you when the DL is getting beat

I think you can only raise average salaries by frontloading contracts with your best players (i.e. Brady and the like). Because otherwise you throw your benchmarks out of whack. Other players who would never say they deserve as much as Brady might use Bodden as a benchmark.

They could get to the top just by signing Brady this year to a $20 million a year contract.

If he leaves, he leaves. We save money and give new guys playing time. By the end of the year we're a better team. He was an UDFA, so it's time we start developing our own UDFAs with playing time.
:snob:

And the Patriots have the 2nd highest FCI (Fan Cost Index) in the league. We are paying for the stadium one way or another.

Bodden was a good player for the Patriots, but if he leaves, let's look at it as an opportunity to enhance the value in the secondary. :)
