Welker hurt himself because he tried going all out after Houston scored a touchdown effortlessly on their first drive. It is obvious that Welker was in playoff mode by the way he was hustling.
It is very possible that Welker would have hurried himself and hurt himself later in the game or in the playoffs. He had been banged up many times by virtue of receiving the most passes of any player in the NFL this season. This implies that he had been tackled (sometimes aggressively) more often than anyone else in the NFL this season.
In a way, we have to deal with these repercussions during the regular season, and get time to other players to step up.
It's better that this happened after we secured the playoff spot. It's also better that this happened before an actual game that counts. Such a season-ending injury happened just at the right time, and the timing could have been a lot worse.
The fact that he hurt himself from exerting effort, not from being hit, means there was a chance this would happen during playoffs. And regarding the loss, it doesn't really matter.
Let's field the best team we got, and then execute. We can beat any team in the playoffs if we play our best and coach our best during the game. We still have weapons on offense without Welker.
Our real big question is the defensive performance in the last quarter. Even with Welker, we were not good at catching up late in the game. Thus, our defense needs to play really well to preserve the lead in games.
