Ravens Week Discussion

Ravens24x7 are spying on us, haha.

There is a lot of reference to the Bills and Jets games and then saying the Falcons are over-rated.

Jets 3-0
Falcons 2-1
Bills 1-2

I see the clear evidence of every part of the Pats team trending upward and our anonymous defense is letting fans at least look past it. Cool with me, but it would be good for you Ravens fans to check the stats if you think our D is pedestrian. Don't count sacks, count points.

Belichick's PC today included lots of Ravens Chatter.

It Is What It Is Bill Belichick Q&A, 9/29

EXCERPT:
BB: Well, this is a real good football team, a real good organization that we’re facing this week. Ozzie [Newsome] and John [Harbaugh] have done a tremendous job at putting together this team. They’re explosive. They’re talented. They’re very physical. They play smart football. They’re really pretty good at everything they do — the running game, the passing game, the kicking game — really just all phases of the game. They’re a good situational football team and they can play to their own different styles and they can also defend and deal with the different styles that the opponents bring to them. I think it’s been impressive what they’ve been able to do. They’ve gotten off to a great start, playing from ahead, playing an offensive system – even though they’ve been in different styles of it – they’ve been effective. They’ve moved the ball, they’ve got it down the field. They’ve run it. They’ve thrown it. They’ve been consistent. They’ve been good in the red area [and] they’ve been good on third down. They’re real good on first down. Defensively, they play very well in the red area. They’ve already got a lot of negative plays – sacks, turnovers, negative runs, stuff like that. Of course, with John’s [Harbaugh] background in the kicking game, that’s always a strength of any team that he’s a part of and certainly [with] the Ravens. Another good tight end with [Todd] Heap. [The Ravens have a] real experienced group of receivers, guys that really know what they’re doing and good depth at the skill positions, at running back, and a big offensive line. Not a lot of weaknesses and that’s shown up in the way that they play and the way they’ve started the season. They’ve been impressive to watch. They’re well-coached and they’re tough. They are physical.

This forum really needs [ballwashing] tags...

I'm not counting sacks. I'm counting on two things. Buffalo moved the ball on the Pats. The Jets moved the ball on the Pats, when they needed to and it mattered most. The Pats did a good job of playing solid D last week against the Falcons. That is a dynamic offense, one that is similar to ours. But there is one HUGE difference between us and the Falcons. Offensive Line. We have a big, mean, aggressive, and technically sound line.

Gaither- 6'9" 330 lbs. solid in run and pass
Grubbs- Possible Pro Bowler
Birk- Multi time Pro Bowler, invaluable football knowledge
Chester- Guard that is finally stepping up and using his athletic ability
Oher- A straight up beast of a run blocker and improving pass protector

If the Bills and the Jets moved the ball on the Patriots, how do you explain the Ravens' performance against the Chargers?

We were shat on, but redzone efficiency can't just be disregarded as irrelevant. . .

When everything was said and done, that Chargers scored 26 points.

Which was not a solid outing by any means considering that the Chargers didn't have a run game either.

The Chargers offense is going to be hard for a lot of people to stop. And we didn't do a good job of eliminating big plays. We have small fast corners. They have the biggest receivers in the league and one of the best QB's. When it came down to where the points are scored, the Bolts could only get 3's.

This year, the Ravens are unsatisfied with 3 points in the Red Zone this year. They want to get 6 every time they touch the ball.

There's a reason they didn't have a run game.

Yeah, because LT isn't what he once was and Darren Sproles is 5 feet tall and can't run it between the tackles. It was easy for Baltimore's defense to shut that down. The fact that the Chargers nearly put up 30 despite not having a running game should be a concern. Not to sound like a smug ****, that's just what I think. There are plenty of things that I'm concerned about with us coming up as well. But since we're looking at the Ravens in this thread, those were my observations.

Thanks for joining the discussion. However, if the Jets and Bills "moved" the ball; what exactly did the Chargers do to your team? Steamrolled? Flattened? Ran over? SD put up 26 points and 475 yards.

Hell, when it came time, the Chiefs offense beat them like a rented mule.

However, if Wilfork and Welker are out, this will be a competitive game. In the end, it will come down to where TB is in his progression.

Which is made up for by Darren Sproles who is the specific type of player that kills our defense, which is why having Welker on Sunday will give you a significant advantage.

The Chiefs were held under 200 yards and basically scored 14 points.

I understand that it was just Kansas City, but they really weren't impressive in any way.

I don't care who is running the rock on sunday. These Ravens are determined to keep every runner from gaining a single yard.

Our defense is going through a transition, they have never had an offense before. This is a defense that will continue to be rested throughout this season. Our D will give up some yards, no doubt. Bend but don't break.

Turnover Ratio and TD-FG in Red Zone are two key stat in winning football.

The Ravens pride themselves in winning those categories this year. As I know the Pats want to aswell.

That mentality comes from Rex Ryan, and it was/is so ingrained in their heads that they'll happily give up 300+ yards passing as long as the run game is shut down.

If we lose, I highly, highly doubt it will be because of our run defense; again, I'm picking the Pats, but New England has a good chance because of Moss/Welker/Brady, not Taylor/Maroney(sp).

Peterson is the only back in the league that I think would have a remote chance of breaking 100 on the Ravens, as well as Johnon/Sproles if they got the ball on their own 20 and broke into the second level.

Hopefully we will have 2 Welkers on the field on Sunday

My view isn't "stat" driven but "situational football" driven. The Chiefs scored a special teams touchdown and off an interception. As such the need/ability to produce drives/yards/TOP wasn't required. This will skew the stats for a game.

If a team has 3 long drives that produce FG's, they will look dominant on standard stats if the opponent ran back 3 kickoffs for TD's. Those stats are deceiving because the Chiefs essentially didn't need to do anything offensively to score.

Rewatch the end of the game, when the game was on the line, the Chiefs produced quality drives on a "vaunted" defense.

So then by that logic, the Chargers weren't very impressive versus the Ravens as 26 points in your home-opener certainly isn't mind-blowing, and the stats deceive?
