Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense...

Re: Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense.....

I saw about half of the game, i thought the D played well enough. Its a work in progress with all the new people it will take time to jell but i think it will, it always seems to.

It would be BS to lose Mayo for any significant time, obviously i hope its not a real serious injury.

Re: Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense.....

It showed today that this is a newish defensive unit, however there's definitely something to work with there.

I was a little concerned with our inability to get to Edwards until relatively late in the game with the pass rush and I wasn't surprised by Fred Jackson either.

I'm just pleased we go out of that one with the win. The reality is the defense only conceded 17 points.. the other 7 on the offense. That's a reasonable start.

Re: Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense.....

So looking at the game and the statistics, what, exactly can you give me for issues with the defense other than the typical hyperbole this site vomits up?

Sorry that Buffalo wasn't held to negative yards and shut out, it's your fault if you don't understand just how competitive this league is.

That was a brand new offensive line out there, with 3 players that had never played a game in the NFL, and it stoned the Patriots a lot more often than it should have. I'm quite confident that nobody on the Patriots coaching staff or on the defense was happy with that performance.

It was just week one, and I expect things to get better. The team is integrating a fair amount of new parts, and that's going to take time. Mayo missed a lot of the game, as well. I was one of the people in the chat room telling people to relax. However, the game's done and it's time for honest evaluation. If blowing smoke about "happy with the defensive effort" works for you, you go for it. I didn't see it that way. The defense played a bad offense and struggled doing so. It's got about 6 days to get better, or else the Jets are going to bury this defense in the sandbox. The Jets offensive line has played more than just 50 combined games.

Re: Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense.....

1 the DL will with out seymour teams can just double team wilfork and do what they want

and i thik more teams will run the no huddle offense VS the pats because as the game wnet on it was only takeing one rookie to blow wilfork 5 yerds off the ball he is to big to be on the field that long

2 the LB they played ok TBC had 2 sacks AD had 1 sack burgess had 1 sack

but if mayo go's on IR or miss is a lot of games it may get ugly on D for the pats just thinking about alexander starting at LB scars me lol

3 the DB they looked ok some big hits here and there

but the bills never realy throw the ball to the WR they where geting open but they throw to the TE and backs we will see how they hold up VS better teams

i will sey this when they got more aggressive with play calling and blitz package they looked better thanks to more speed on D via TBC... AD.... and burgess

but over all this D is a work in progress and we will see how they turn out as the season go's on

Overall I thought it was fair. I like the way the coaching staff set them free to blitz in the 2nd half. I also enjoyed the secondary a lot. I thought Springs played a great game vs TO and Bodden was solid. I wanted to see Butler come up with the INT on that one play, otherwise I thought he was good too.

Not world beaters thus far but I'm hoping they improve or had a off day. Offense made it tough for them too with all the drops and miscues in the first half by Brady and the WR's.

Re: Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense.....

I agree.

The secondary played well. Banta-Cain and Guyton played well. But, overall, we couldn't play well enough to beat a really aweful offense, with three rookies offensive linemen playing their first game.

If the defensive front can't seek and destroy the quarterback against three rookies, how will they do next week against four #1 first round veterans.

I certainly hope so.

Re: Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense.....

Hope BB brings in some help like Kevin Carter

Re: Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense.....

If we give up 275 yds and 17 pts every week we'll probably go 16-0, so no reason for alarm with the D. Plus, BB defenses generally get better by the end of the year. They'll need Mayo.

Re: Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense.....

It is this attitude that loses us playoff games and Super Bowls. We shouldn't be giving up 17 points to an aweful offense who plays three rookies on the OL and plays the no huddle. Buffalo played sandlot football and almost beat the Super Bowl favorites.

Re: Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense.....

I don't understand people who like to gloss over the bad. Do you think BB and the team would be where they are if they just said "Oh, it wasn't so bad, the D only gave up 17 points, lets move on"? Some parts played well (secondary) and some not so much (D-line). There are a lot of areas of concern right now.

Re: Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense.....

Why exactly is everyone calling Buffalo's offense "awful"? It's brand new. That doesn't mean bad.

The pressure was satisfactory, certainly better than last year. Last year I don't have much hope that the D stops the Bills from getting the field goal; this year we get 2 sacks. The pass defence was much better than last year, but it seemed to come at the expense of the run defence. If Mayo is out for longer than a couple of games they'll need to put serious thought into fixing that.

i argee it may look good in the box score under 300 yerds of O by the bills only 17 points and 4 sacks but the D line and O line was just bad they could not run the ball they only got yerds on drew plays

if the O line and D line keeps playing like that VS teams like the jets fines stellers and ravens and if brady has to throw 50 to 60 times a game for the pats to win

we can forget the SB they wont even make the playoffs

Last year, the Patriots allowed 10 points against the Bills in the two games combined. The year before, the combined total was 17 points.

Sure... though I'm not sure how that addresses anything I said, particularly the part about the Bills having a brand new offense with brand new players in it. What use are stats from last year?

Three things you're missing, confused about, or are just choosing to overlook:

1. The Buffalo O coordinator called a good game and OLine was well prepared. Give credit where credit is due.
2. Other than dump offs to Fred Jackson, what success did they really have on offense? Assuming Mayo comes back, I'm not worried about this type of play in the future with Guyton, Mayo and Meriweather flying around.
3. you're buying too much into preseason hype - you have no idea how good Buffalo's offense is. Maybe they will go on to average 30 pts a game this year. Who knows? Bottom line - you give up 275 yds and 17 points in the NFL and you're happy. Not saying they don't have a lot to work on. But they looked far improved from the preseason.

Re: Everyone's thoughts on ONLY the defense.....

the defense wasnt that bad deuche, u have to give the bills o coordinator credit for sum fantastic play calls..i.e.-the screens which they had caught us in man coverage and cleared out the whole area for the rb and the linemen only had to block the man covering the tailback which was a linebacker...i woulda been in the same d a dean pees was on the down and distance when they threw that screen play on third and fifteen...press man with 2 deep safeties..

I think the point is that the O-line and D-line looked quite bad. I need both hands to count the amount of times I saw Maroney get handed the ball only to get immediately met by 2+ lineman ready to take off his head. Heck, he didn't even have time/space to "dance", let alone hit an imaginary hole.

leterko hit the nail on the head with his statement above! Oline did look worse than any other part of our team, i agree Satch..ive been saying this for the past year...our oline is our weakness by far

i dont think the bills O is awful i just think that the pats D was so bad if the bills was more aggressive on O they could of put up 40 points

and if the pats dont fix that VS teams that will be more aggressive on O they wont win to many games like that

The positives are the play of Bodden and the way they finished the game by getting to the passer.

The negatives are the way they couldn't get off the field on 3rd and longs and the poor play on the D line for much of the game.

They've got a lot to learn and plenty to improve on. I'd also like to see Brace a little more involved.

Not quite ready to start talking about Sanchez and Rex Ryan in hushed tones, like they're 12 foot tall warriors who **** Volkswagons, but it's not hard to envision their OL slapping us around a little bit (or a lot) while Leon Washington runs wild.
