I've definitely started rating threads with greater frequency lately, as a result of this stuff happening, but I still generally don't. If a thread truly sucks, I'll give it one star, and sometimes if I really like one I'll give it 4 or 5, but that's about it.

Well I'm not sure what standard people are using to judge threads. This is a free for all discussion board, not submissions of Pulitzer-quality prose. It just seems a bit amusing to me that the vast majority of threads right now are 1 star threads.

If some bozo is rating all threads 1 star all it takes is for other posters who disagree to contribute their rating

Why? Does it matter at all? I'm asking seriously. Is there any effect other than the number of stars? I've never taken the time to check on this.

None that I know of. And yes I never look at # of stars to decide if I read a thread. I have on occasion given either 1 star to idiotic topics or 5 stars to an informative thread FWIW...nada.

It seems other people here can't grasp the concept of the star system here though.

Tons of threads are getting one star, but not because they're bad topics rather because of the news contained within them. (ie: Schefter: Peppers trade not going to happen)

Also it just look ridiculous, logging on and seeing almost the entire top half of the first page with a single star next to each topic.

Since about 20 of the top 25 threads involve Julius Peppers talk, I tempted to throw a bunch of 1 Stars out myself.

Having said that, what's the big deal if someone is rating the threads.

In the best case, it helps others find good threads to read.

In the worst case, someone gives purposfully misleading ratings (5 stars for trade Brady threads, and 1 star for anything I post).

In the latter case, all one has to do is rate the threads themselves to change the overall rating. If enough of us rated even a few threads a day, many others would be saved the time of weeding through garbage.

There's absolutely no reason for that thread to have one star.

This is great. The mods chose to combine the "new" rating thread with the "old" rating thread, but then left the 20+ Julius Peppers threads on the front page.

Probably not, alas. What people who habitually get one-star ratings ought to ask themselves is, "Why do my peers think so poorly of my posts? Perhaps it isn't the entire world that is whacked. Perhaps I need to re-think my posts."

Of course, if they were that smart, they wouldn't be posting a new dumb thread every day. And if they had any pride at all, they wouldn't shoot for a 2-star rating, which is a pretty low standard when you think about it. They would try to post intelligent, well thought out topics of discussion. I don't think anyone ever gave someone a one-star rating because they disagreed with the opinion presented. One-star rating are for....well, as the rating system says, TERRIBLE threads. Anyone who posts a lot will get one or two, but when ALL of one's threads are judged moronic, it is time to look at ones self.

But apparently people who do gather one-star ratings time after time are doing the best they can, and are totally clueless and are satisfied with being unable to rise to a level approaching mediocrity, and enjoy being the butt of their peers.

Present company excepted, of course.

Yeah, but a lot (most) of those threads are pretty good, I thought. I wouldn't give out one-stars just because the topic is a hot one.
