A nice little article in the Kent County Daily Times (RI) notes that Dillon can be cut "before training camp" for only the $1.9mil figure listed on Miguel's patscap.com page as the charge to cut him before 6/1/2006. I'm NOT suggesting we cut Dillon, I'm just wondering which is a accurate. As I read patscap.com numbers, the charge to cut Dillon now will be $5.7mil against next year's ('07) cap figure, a much heftier total than the $1.9 million the article mentions. I wonder if the reporter neglected to check out the TOTAL charge for cutting Dillon, and only looked at this year's charge?

As Sgt. Friday said, "Please, only the facts, mam."

Parente apparently confused finding Miguel's site with understanding the cap.

This would be a great deal if you could do it to all of them.....

"On a related note, the Patriots have financial flexibility if Dillon does not recover from last year's injuries. Cutting him before the start of training camp would only cost them $1.9 million, whereas they'd suffer a $5.7 million cap hit if they release him next year. There's a slim chance Dillon won't be here in September, but it's worth noting the Patriots have leeway if they consider making a move. "

First off, training camp has nothing to do with anything. Dillon's remaining amortization to date is $7.6M divided over the remaining 4 years of his contract at $1.9M a year. That hits the cap one way or another and there is no way around it. So if we release him after June 1 this year we take the scheduled hit for this year ($1.9M) and the entire remaining balance next year ($5.7M). Which is why even if he cannot walk he would not be released this season. It would only save $716,000 on the 2006 cap, minus of course his roster replacements cost.

If we cut him next season before June 1 he still costs $5.7M on the 2007 cap albeit dead cap. If we cut him next year after June 1 he would cost us $1.9M against the 2007 cap and $3.8M against the 2008 dead cap - provided he doesn't actually recieve any more of his money in the form of bonus, which some sources seem to indicate he is again scheduled to for 2007.

The Kent County Daily Times doesn't usually print much more than AP wire reports - with good reason apparently.

The reporter doesn't have the least bit of understanding of the NFL Cap.

In fact of the matter is that the Pats actually made some of his 4th and 5th year salary guaranteed this year, making it even more likely that Dillon will play out the duration of his contract (barring injury).

Dillon would have a very high cap hit if cut regardless, but the fact that the Pats front office felt confident enough to move some of that salary forward seems like a good sign that they are confident of his return to form.

Yo! Answer's Right on Miguel's 2006 Roster Page

so if ya want the number(s), there they are.
i can't imagine many situations in which corey gets released.
BB/SP even kept ol' "Slo-Mo" Antowain Smith around for the full term of his deal.

Thank you, Mo' and Joe', for confirming what I suspected was the case.

Upon further research it now appears to me that in exchange for getting the $2.29 million upfront Dillon agreed to defer the $3 million option bonus to 2007. I do not know if the 2007 option bonus was protected with a non-exercise guarantee clause as was the 2006 option bonus but I doubt that it was.

If Dillon were to be cut this year, his 2007 cap hit, according to my new calculations, would be $3,517,500.

So while the figures may change the principle remains the same. You don't save money by cutting Dillon this season, and the Pat's did not cleverly position themselves to somehow do so...

Did you ever hear from Adam as to and insight on what happened with Brady's deal to so dramatically change his cap # for 2006?

No. I have asked around. Another capologist also had Brady's number at 13.9 million. Reiss has it at $13.8 million. If it were not for the recent reports that the Pats were under the cap by $15 million, I would not be inclined to believe Clayton's report. In April my numbers was really close to the reported numbers. If I do not use Brady's number as $15.67 million, then my total number is off by more than a million dollars and there have not been that many transactions since April that would cause my numbers to be so off.
