without hindsight, considering only what was known about Brady based on Michigan, when she he have been drafted?

I still don’t see how he should not have been drafted before some of the “Brady 6 or 5”. Whatever it was.

Maybe 3rd round?

We'll teams shouldn't have really cared about his lack of athletism compared to other guys.

He had protypical size which is a plus. His arm even then was nfl caliber and fairly accurate. He showed at Michigan he could make all the throws.

He played in something close to an NFL offense. His release was fairly quick even then.

I would have said a mid 2nd round pick due to lack of demonstrated mobility at the time.

I can't say for sure, but even Scott Pioli has said that he was the top player left on the board well before they took him. They just couldn't bring themselves to take him given that they already had three QBs on the roster.

I could see Pennington going first that year (among QBs) but the rest of those guys were bums. Makes no sense that he would go after those guys, especially after Brady's orange bowl.

6th round pick imo, poor build, skinny, lacks great physical stature and strength, lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush, lacks a really strong arm, can't drive the ball down field, does not really throw a tight spiral, system type player who can get exposed if forced to ad-lib, gets knocked down easily.

He was incredibly skinny and questions if he could stand up to an NFL pounding were legit. He only started his senior year and even that was split with Drew Henson so even his own coaches didn’t believe in him. His arm was good but not a rocket so he did nothing that wowed you and then there was that combine run. Holy crap does he look unathletic. However, he did play at a major school, he had a ton of magically comebacks on his resume, and if you watched film he was clearly a player. Sometimes you have to go with your gut and trust the film over numbers and that sort of player is worth a 3rd round flyer IMO.

Based on his play in college, the 3rd round the latest. He was clutch in college, he posted good stats, he was a winner.

Perhaps after Pennington 18 but before Giovanni Carmazzi at 65 or Chris Redman at 75.

Carmazzi

One wonders if he would have had the same success if he had been taken in the second round. Quite possibly, but as we know, being 199 has been a huge motivating factor.

Brady was a big game qb in college. Beat Ohio State which is something you don’t see very often out of Michigan.

Beat Penn State and Alabama as underdogs.

Definitely something about his mental makeup that was overlooked by everyone.

Let's not get all Polian here

To be fair, I know U-M doesn’t beat OSU these days, but when Brady was there U-M was dominating the rivalry. So beating the Buckeyes was par for the course.

The win over Shaun Alexander’s Alabama team was the real beauty that year. Brady was unreal in that game.

And how many Michigan Qb’s have got it done since Brady and Henson left?

Yeah based on his career he seems like a guy who would have been satisfied being a second round pick.
