Long ago Patriots players got this simple reminder:

WHEN YOU LEAVE HERE ...

* Don't believe or fuel the hype
* Manage expectations
* Ignore the noise
* Speak for yourself

What players see at Gillette exit

Anybody know when the “ignore the noise” axiom got dropped?

With players contributing to the media noise about Mac being traded and stories about players picking sides in the QB controversy it seems players are making noise not ignoring it. Used to be they were making their noise on the field not in the media.

Maybe this is why BB plans a housecleaning next year, with so few players under contract after this season? That may be how he takes his team back from the noisemakers.

It is cute that people thought we were somehow the exception to human behavior. Players followed the rules because they won and winning makes for longer careers and bigger paydays.

Once that goes away, human tendencies associated with lack of success show up.

The only player who I know that acknowledged the whole "picking sides" thing is DMac. All he said is that some players preferred Zappe. Not sure why this is surprising? There were players who preferred Bledsoe as well once upon a time.

The problem, currently, is with the crappy Boston media and the fans who prefer to be miserable and tear down players and the team.

People here are confused.

What makes you think anyone inside Gillette believe any of the BS circulating in the media… beyond what media are telling you based on unnamed sources and “people close to the situation.”

For all you know Mac and BB are arm and arm with Obie busting their tails to fix the offense. Stop believing this BS until something confirmed happens. This is soap opera horsesht. The principles here are probably laughing at how gullible you are.

The Patriot Way ended, forever, after the 2019 season.

Question is, do those human tendencies associated with lack of success show up because winning goes away?
Or does winning go away because those tendencies associated with lack of success crowd it out?

truth be told I believe both are always present. Each of us chooses which we manifest. Every day 50 or 100 or so players and coaches each make their own individual decisions. What we see over the course of the season is how all those individual decisions collectively play out in competition with the rest of the league.

with all the noise this off-season it will be interesting to see how things play out over the course of the coming season.

I'd add to Wozzy & Ahmed that people who devote their lives to watching other people do important things tend to make themselves feel important by ginning up rumors, especially those most likely to get other onlookers upset. It's a staple of advertising in business & politics that getting attention by making people feel scared or angry is always in play. Its not just Noise that we'd do well to ignore, it's like feces on the sidewalk - one has to step around it to get where one is going, pretend it doesn't smell, & leave the poor characters who produce it to themselves.
Usually, a full quote of some "Insider" statement shows a milder reality, such as DMac simply saying that Zappe had players' support - not that they wanted Mac demoted, fired or shat upon thereby. Agreed Pats probably roll eyes at press b.s.; &, sure, human nature will guarantee gripes & blames when losing. Then, winning again "cures" it. The Path to Winning, clearly presented, is what, before it starts to kick in again, creates the incentive for everybody to pull together, not so? Seems to me like BB & new array of coaches are qualified to put that across. Also agree w/ those who have suggested that Matt Groh may be aggregating & presenting to BB better scouting & recommendations than Nick Caserio had done recently, for Draft, trades, extensions, etc. We'll see... How about a cheer for Celts & Bruins, meanwhile?

Maybe not. This year's FA is back to the Patriot Way - 2021 FA was fun at the time but did not work. Patricia was a disaster so now we are back to a real OC and Offensive Line Coach. And @Ross12 correctly pointed out in another thread that it looks like Mac physically matured and might be ready. We had a few good drafts and maybe 2023's draft will be good with the new draft team. We might be closer to being back to the Patriot Way than we realize. We will see. If 2023 is successful, not only BB learned something, the Krafts did too.

This could be looked at as an example of Bill being out of touch with the current version of NYFL players. Maybe this group of players understands that it's about them, not the coaches, and they feel that they have every right to express their concerns. After all, it's their careers and bodies that are on the line.

Back in 2007 Tom Coughlin had a sit down with some of the Giant players and was told that he might want to lighten up a bit. After that meeting they went on to win most of their games, including the SB vs the Pats. I don't have confidence that Bill would do such a thing even though the NYFL players seem to be coming out of the dark ages of blind allegiance.

The my-way-or-the-highway method is alive and well and living in Foxboro. We'll see if it works

Yes, to simply put it... when the GOAT left for Tampa...

In the Patriots case, winning went away when Brady put NE in his rearview mirror.

The 2021 spending spree at least let them identify a couple players they may want to keep around on another contract - Judon, perhaps Hunter Henry, perhaps Jalen Mills. Maybe Bourne if he can return to 2021 form and put 2022 behind him. Was Adrian Phillips signed during that group? I can’t recall. In any case, you at least found a couple decent pieces.

Mac hopefully does rise to the challenge, they get a couple impact players early in the draft, BOB and Klemm do their jobs and the team competes this year. I don’t think it’s too farfetched. But I am curious about plans beyond this year since so many contracts expire after this season and then most of the rest that weren’t drafted recently expire after 2024’s season. They have a ton of cash coming available after this year and if we don’t expect them to make a big free agency splash again then I am not sure what the plans are. They’d need to start using that money to extend guys like Dugger and Onwenu soon, if they intend to retain them, unless they are planning to let almost all of them hit free agency and see what their markets are.

Just wanted to mention that the Patriots have just as many if not more players under contract next year than much of the rest of the league. It’s a reset year for everyone.

Useful. Assume that may mean a richer than usual FA pool. Pats will have cash to spend and cap going up so they can spend, right? Should make for some interesting developments.

In my opinion, Ignore the noise = don't listen to everyone telling you how good we are.

I believe this was more relevant when they were winning the division every year for eternity.

Oh definitely. I could see them picking who they want to resign and seeing the core really fleshed out over the year, then some big FA signings for sure. Macs development will play a big part in that.

The Patriots have 37 players signed for next year with an estimated $124M Cap Space.
The Titans have 41 players signed for next year with an estimated $119M Cap Space.
The Cowboys have 47 players signed for next year, but only have an estimated $45M in Cap Space

That is a snap shot as of right now with the Cap Estimated to be $256M.

The Pats are sitting in a good spot for next season.

With a lot of teams having cap space projected for 2024, I wonder if we will see a ton of extensions this season as teams fear losing free agents to teams with cap space.

I hope the Pats lock up Dugger, Onwenu and Uche during this year.
