Wes Welker: Is He Canton Bound

Someone who I do think is HOF worthy from our past teams is Seymour.

He is the greatest slot receiver of all time by a pretty large margin, so he has a case. Unfortunately they do devalue this position in Canton, so it's unclear if he gets in. I think he should (there are too many qbs that aren't very good in the HoF, not enough good receivers in general).

Still, within football circles, it's pretty clear that if you were making a team with the 'best' players of all time, i'm pretty sure he'd be on the roster.

Yes. Guys like Allworth, Bilitnikoff have less stats but won in a different era.

My point is that there are WRs with better numbers than WW that will never get in the HoF b/c they have not won.

IDK, I don't think Super Bowls are as important to WRs as other positions. You got guys like Cris Carter, Tim Brown, and Steve Largent in there without any Super Bowls and a bunch of guys with one or less.

Absolutely. With him it's just less of a conversation, he definitely gets in at some point IMO.

Nose tackle is another position that never gets any love. Again if you were making your best team ever and you were running a 3-4 defense, your best nose tackle might not even be in the HOF.

No. He was good but not great. Though he got catches and yards i feel like he was never one of those true difference makers.

To me guys like Edelman and Troy Brown never got the yards he did i felt that at their best both were more impactful players when it comes to winning the big games.

The bottom line is that Welker has more catches than Largent in a shorter period of time, and repeatedly bested him in yards per season - though Largent had more "big" deep catches and seasons with 18 yard per catch averages and that may have helped him

I view him as one of the best to play his position and thus I'd say he's earned a spot, especially given his balls out style of leaving it all on the field

But I'm going to guess he's not going to make the cut

Largent numbers are a product of his era. The guy was a 7 time Pro Bowler, a 3 time first team All Pro, a 4 time second team All Pro, and a first team member of the All Decade team for the 80s. You can make the argument that he was the best WR in the 80s not named Jerry Rice. Largent getting in means absolutely nothing to Welker's chances.

Again, this is the problem with comparing WRs of two different eras. Welker played in a pass first league where the rules were stacked against the defense. Largent played in a run first league where the defense could actually play defense. If Largent played in the same era Welker played in, his numbers would have been so much better than they were.

Doubtful, had SB 42 been closed out he'd prob have been MVP and it's a bit of a different story....weird because nothing he did had to change for that to happen.

I actually agree.

Careers are defined by "moments." That was Welker's moment.

If he makes that catch and puts the game away, he would have had his defining moment and not been allowed to leave the Patriots for "cap reasons." He'd have finished his career in New England and be on a lot of short lists for Canton.

If Malcolm Butler puts together four or five more outstanding seasons and gets on a long list of virtually equally deserving Corners, that play will put him in Canton over the others.

No chance. Guys like Dez Bryant aren't even 30 yet and have more tds than he's had in his entire career. Plus guys like AJ green/Jordy will surpass him in scores this season

Football writers almost treat WRs that played in the 2000s like BBWAA does prolific hitters during the steroid era. They are frowned upon because of their stats and assume they didn't "earn"their numbers.

Thats applicable to Carter and Brown as they put up most of their numbers in the 1990s and early 2000s

WW won't get in for that reason.

It's probably not fair, but that drop in the Superbowl was a defining career moment. If he makes that catch, he'd have a good shot at getting into Canton.
