chargers/dolphins = stupid org's

the whole set of videos of him talking plays with manning was so manning. Show off on film all the game planning talks about how he is the 'coach' on the field so more people talk about this.

It should've been translated.

Manning: "So Wes, I want you to do a quick six-yard slant between two linebackers and the strong safety so I can lead you by about two yards as all three converge on you by reading my eyes. I'll try to give you time to duck, if possible. Just make sure to catch the ball regardless."

And Bill told Welker that and he did not seem smart enough to figure that out.

That was in 2009, and it was in regards to punt returns.

The show was interesting. Welker definitely was a hard worker. Loved him as a Patriot and wish him well.

That said, maybe 5 years elapsed has changed my view, but at the time in 2012 I always thought Brady's throw ("THE" throw) to him in SB 46 was off.

Watching the replay again now... I had two immediate reactions... then a third.

1. "Wes should have caught that."

2. "Jules WOULD have caught that."

3. "So would Danny."

I know it didn't feel like it at the time, but it was probably a win-win for both sides.

It felt like Welker lost a bit at the end of his Patriots career, and it was clear BB didn't mind moving on.

We got Danny, and Jules emerged as the true Welker replacement. We win a Super Bowl within 2 years, and 2 in 3 years.

Welker got his full $12M with the Broncos and another chance to win a Super Bowl. I'm not sure he would have seen the second year of his deal here, let alone the incentives.

I do wonder if BB would have brought back Jules still if we re-signed Welker. My guess is yes because Dola was the Welker replacement, and we still re-signed Edelman for peanuts.

I don't think it's fair to say Wes lost anything while he was in NE...he caught what 123 and 118 balls his last two years here so he was still producing at a high level. If he had been resigned in 2013 I can't see why they would still sign DA (or if they could have, cap wise), so whatever BB was thinking about Wes, we ended up with the right guy(s) in creating the JE/DA combo.

As it played out with the Hernandez situation that summer, and Gronk injury later in season, it sure would have been nice to have Wes on that 2013 team in addition to JE/DA, but I can't see a reason to plan that way in free agency time when those decisions were made.

I think the plan was to bring back Jules regardless the either/or was Wes or DA

He was productive, that's true. But I do think he lost a bit.

From 2007 to 2009, he caught around 74-76% of his targets. In the last two seasons, that was 67-71%.

But even beyond the numbers, I think about BB slowly phasing him out. Remember in 2012 when he caught only 3 balls the first week, and Edelman got the start ahead of him week 2?

He certainly came nowhere close to that production level in Denver. So it may have been that BB saw the writing on the wall. The lack of a lot of guarantees in the Patriots offer seems to indicate this.

I agree, although it's strange to think he got next to no interest, other than a trip to the Giants that amounted to nothing.

I can't imagine the Patriots winning the last two Super Bowls without Jules.

At the expense of his health

Maybe. But maybe most of the damage was already done. It's hard to really say with any certainty.

I do hope he's okay with his health overall in life. And he was a great Patriot and deserves a spot in the Patriots HOF. But I don't think he'll be a first ballot, and it will probably take quite some time before he gets in.

Wes Welker > *

He was so amazing to watch. Anybody got that clip where he faked the CB out by turning around as if he was priming for a catch, then immediately went back into his route? It was towards the sidelines and just a go route or something. A shame that on the big stage the team couldn't get a ring for him.

Btw, I am of the crowd who thoroughly believes he had just as much fight as Jules. Jules is a different receiver and I like him just as much, but Welker was outrageous. We didn't lose those SB's because of Welker. That crazy catch by Jules wasn't even a 3/4th down I'd I remember.

It is unbelievable how quickly how could stop and go.
