I guess Reiss linked to this the other day so I'm sure many have seen it before, but I hadn't. ESPN archives teams power ratings positions w/comments over the years. Worth a look--see how Belichick should be worried about his job in 2003, etc. Heh.

New England Patriots 2010 NFL Power Rankings - ESPN

Great post. I love how ppl had the same negative things to say about the Pats in years we won the superbowl. This is going to be a special year. Reading the 07 posts really hurt.

Nice thanks, only Once in eight years do the pats fall below 15th and that was for a week. Pretty impressive

Wow, eerie observation: Once the Pats hit 15-0, Bill Belichick may face a tough decision vs. the Giants: Whether to risk Tom Brady's health against the league's fierciest pass rush, on the road and against a team that could have a playoff spot on the line.

My favorite from 2004:

It's getting old, but the Patriots just seem to get the job done late. They might not look great for the whole game, but in the end it's them making the plays and not their opponents.

Sounds like a team I've been watching in 2010.

Oh and this one to:

Any team that is being led by Bill Belichick and Tom Brady is going to keep contending for a while.

This one in 07 had me laughing

Here's what Bill Belichick should do when he meets Eric Mangini at midfield following the Pats' 58-3 win Sunday: Hand Mangini a camcorder and say, "I don't know what I was thinking stealing your crappy team's signs. But feel free to tape ours."

Perhaps the most interesting one is 2001 (not shown in this link).

I remember following that, and looking back at the end of the year.

Following a disappointing loss to Cincinatti and then the loss of Bledsoe, the 0-2 Patriots were ranked dead last after Week Two. A win over Indy started the climb, eight wins in their final nine games pulled them up the rankings, to end as Super Bowl champs.

I would have liked to see the 2001 rankings. The Pats rankings were very favorable in their superbowl winning years and their 2007 superbowl appearance.

Its amazing how many of those say something to the effect of "The Pats need to overcome injuries." Imagine how good our records would be some of these seasons if we didn't get some of the injuries this team gets hit with every year.

For some reason, I remember Dr. Z of SI having the Pats last in his rankings then too. Amazing to win the SB the same year you're considered worst in the league. (I kinda miss that guy's writing, thought he was pretty good.)

i didn't even know they still had these. what a weird thing to archive.

Excellent thread. Thanks for posting.

I do love our 2007 line on the chart.
