As a long time Patriots Fan who has seen many players come and go I wanted to take a minute to Thank Troy Brown for 15 wonderful seasons. He was everything a fan could want in a player . He gave his all every Sunday and I for one will miss seeing Number 80 on Offense,Defense, and Special Teams. The Guy did everything except take tickets.Troy,Your career may be at an end as a player but in my mind You'll always be going over the middle against The Rams and setting the Patriots up for Adam's winning Field Goal .A great memory provided by a great player. Troy ,You're the best !

...don't forget his special teams play against Pitt to actually get us to the SB against the Rams.....punt return for a TD and a block and lateral for another TD.

My personal opinion: GREATEST PATRIOT EVER!

Troy you are the man and I will be wearing your jersey the rest of my life.

It is a sweet jersey too....one of those SB36 Jerseys.

one phrase best describes Troy Football Player

This is bringing tears to my eyes. Thank you Troy for all that you've done. I hope that we find more players like you.

You can't duplicate what #80 has done for this team all these years - You could only hope for another TEAM player like Brown who can be half as good and devoted to the team concept as he was

God Bless Troy - A one in a million, Patriots all purpose athlete.

I want to see that Jersey retired - IMO No one has the right to wear #80 again

I absolutely agree with you. It just wouldn't be right if anyone else wears that number. I feel the same about 54 and 12.

I think you could put #12 to be retired as a lock

But because McGinest's jersey number was given to Seau the following season, I doubt Bruschi's 54 will be retired either although Willie is still playing he was beyond a superb legendary Linebacker for this team in this decade and was my 2nd favorite LB of all time behind Tippett and Bruschi being third.

I can't find it! :-(
It's over now, but I'm sure they'll post it shortly.

That might have been the best sports retirement speech of all time. Well, besides Favre's...

I cried like a baby. My favorite Patriot ever.

iam surprised it has received little or no national coverage even on NFLN or NFL.com

They hate on the Patriots so why would they want to give good publicity to them or one of their greatest players

He was never the kind of player who piques their interest. Just the kind who piqued Bill's, a smart, hardworking, whatever it takes football player.

He touched on what's going on here now and how people are giving up on this team... They should stream his speech in the locker room before every game for the rest of the season. He was the embodiment of Bill's basic underlying philosophy about how you win in the NFL - DO YOUR JOB. Whatever that job may be on any given Sunday. Don't worry about what that is - that's not your job. Don't question whether there's a better way to utilize your skills or combat someone else's. That's not your job. Don't fret about what some other guy is not doing or getting to do. Just do YOUR job.

The fans should do the same. Quit worrying about Bill doing his. Just do YOUR job and support this team. And always appreciate the opportunity you've been given to even have that job. That's the real lesson to be learned from Troy Brown's career.

Thanks for the memories of a lifetime, Bingo.

I agree 100 % with the thread title. Sometimes there are just certain players which cross the line amongst rivals fans and are respected and sometimes liked by both fan bases. Troy Brown is one of those guys IMO. The guy is in the mold of a Jeter, Rivera or Ortiz like figure. He obviously is not as talented in his sport compared to those guys in their sport but he is a first class individual, team player, hard worker, and just struck me as a great person. As much as I despise the Pats I found myself rooting for troy brown. How many athletes would take a role on defense for the better of the team? Back when the Pats weren't quite the Pats yet, I enjoyed this Troy Brown moment:

55 yards to pay dirt

From around 2000-05 he was arguably the best pure, all-around football player in the NFL.

only florio can find some dark humor in everything
ProFootballTalk.com - TROY BROWN RETIRES

As expected, long-time Patriots receiver Troy Brown has announced his retirement from the NFL.

Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe is blogging from the press conference, where Brown said that he passed on an opportunity to sign with the New York Jets.

“I had the opportunity to do it, but it didn’t feel right,” Brown said.

Per Reiss, Brown said he didn’t like the look of green and white.

Brown played college football at Marshall, where he wore (you guessed it) green and white.

he meant the jets , idiot florio !

It is a shame Hall of Fame voting is largely a statistics game. If character and epitomizing what is best in professional team sports truly mattered, Troy would one day find himself in Canton. As his raw numbers do not line up well with pure receivers and current hall of fame members, I suspect we will not see that day. He certainly deserves the Patriots Hall of Fame and to have his number retired for all he has done for the team and what he means to fans. He is one of the first names to come to mind when you think of great Patriot players, and I hope he finds a role with the organization as he would serve as a great role model for younger players.

I have Patriot gear but never took the plunge to buy a player specific jersey. Troy will be my first!
