This So-Called Coughlin Factor

So we keep hearing about the presence of Tom Coughlin in the Jacksonville organization and how he apparently owns BB, TB12 and the Pats.

Yes his head-coached teams defeated the Patriots in '07 and '11, but that '07 Giants pass rush was as ferocious as I've ever seen, the Pats had almost no-running game, and barring a dropped INT from Asante Samuel and a miraculous helmet catch, that game probably goes the Pats way.

In 2011 our defense probably had no business playing in the Super Bowl and Gronk was on one leg. Again that came down to a couple plays. I would hardly call this, "Coughlin owns the Patriots." These are players he recruited but he's no longer a coach and is not on the sidelines calling plays.

How much effect does he really have on this Jacksonville team and this game compared to what a coach would? Because I'm just not really buying this narrative that's been conjured up.

SB42 IMHO came down to a terrible gameplan on offense.

There are a slew of people that want the Pats to lose, and grasp on to the Coughlin thing to make themselves feel better. If the Jags can establish the run AND get stops on defense, they have a shot. If not, they will get rolled.

Cow Herd was talking on his show how every decade has its dominate coach that is leagues above the rest and argued that if Coughlin had Brady, we might be singing a different tune with 2001 and on being all BB.

That of course conveniently overlooks his measurable successes without Brady, including giving the Browns their last post-season appearance, managing dominance in the salary cap era, etc.,

Either way, it's an overblown narrative IMO. Coughlin won't be on the field. He's a leader for sure, probably his most notable quality, but he won't be on the field that day.

That being said, I've always had respect for him. Good winner and loser. Isn't gaudy. Just marches his teams through the trenches.

Coughlin instilled a from-the-top sense of work ethic, professionalism, and accountability. That's been valuable for them, but he's not involved in X's and O's on game day or in game week prep, IMO.
