Count me as one of millions who were scratching their heads when Cannon signed that 5-year, $32.4M extension last year. But as Reiss pointed out in his column today, based on where the market is going, great value.

Stephen Gostkowski balanced 'trying year' with 'most rewarding' end result

8. The five-year, $32.4 million contract extension signed by Patriots right tackle Marcus Cannon in November was one of the first things that came to mind after news this past week that the Kansas City Chiefs were close to signing right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif to a five-year, $41.25 million extension. When guards are hauling in deals at a reported $8 million per season with $20 million guaranteed, that’s notable.

It's amazing the turnaround. I literally thought any street free agent could do a better job coming off his AFC championship performance against Denver and wanted him gone ASAP. Now, he may be our best lineman.

Being GM is much more than simply making picks in April. Though, IMO, BB has been excellent at that as well - his best GM qualities seem to be mid season pick ups & knowing how much to give to whom (and the right time to do so).

I usually stay somewhat neutral on player quality because I am just not that good at it. But I thought getting rid of Cannon was a no brainer. Probably the most wrong I've ever been about a player. It was an amazing turnaround. Happy for him.

He still overpaid...no one would have given him close to that last year.

I thought he was gonna be done in NE, boy I was so wrong, with the help of Dante he really turned around his career.

I agree that it was a great deal and im glad we got him locked up. However, I dont think it was a very head scratching move at the time. He was having a great season when he signed the deal, its not like he signed it last year when he sucked.

Few people were as vocal as I was about how much he sucked the past few seasons. Since then, however, the coaching and his own conditioning and health has transformed him and made him the player we saw his potential to be pre-2014. I am so appreciative of his play in 2016 and I am glad to say I am now a fan. I don't take back the things I said about him during the down time because he legitimately played poorly. But I have learned to be more patient and understanding in my assessment of why a player may be underperforming.

And you can't have a discussion without a HUGE shout out to Dante Scar! Thanks, Scar. I hope you choose to keep coaching at least until the GOAT decides to finally walk away after hopefully a few more trophies.

He was having a good year, though I don't think anyone was considering him as an All Pro-caliber player. At the time, it wasn't clear if Vollmer would return or not, and this deal signaled it was unlikely too.

im afraid that you sir are going to be shocked later this week

True but you dont have to be an all-pro tackle to make 6.5M/year, that is fair money for any starting quality tackle.

Yes, but until then, I had thought of him as the backup swing tackle, not as the starter but the injury replacement for the injured starter.

Part of me is still afraid he will turn back into a pumpkin if Dante retires again.

But yeah, tremendous value even as an average starting RT, let alone an All Pro-caliber one.

One of the things that people forget about the 2015/2016 season was that Cannon played almost the entire 2nd half of the season with Turf toe. With the injuries we had on the O-line, the team couldn't afford to lose him at RT and he gutted it out.. So, while people mention the game against Denver, I like to point out that he was going against two of the best in Ware and Miller.

Was I surprised by Belichick giving him the contract he did. Yep. Though I have been a supporter of Cannon since Day 1.

I think that it has become painfully obvious how bad of a fit for the Pats Guglielmo really was with Scarnecchia's return and the O-line doing much better. Mason and Thuney made some good strides, but they still need someone at center who can pick up the late blitzes, stunts, and twists.. This has been an ongoing concern since the 2007 SB.

I think this is still not as underrated as they picked up Pat Chung off the FA and resigned him on the cheap for another couple of years. Without the renewed play of him, we don't win 2 superbowls, and without him playing at that level on a bargain contract, we wouldn't have the money to sign other players who helped us win 2 superbowls.

Cannon's deal pays him in the $6 million range. This is comparable to the money earned by Brian Bulaga, Mitchel Schwartz and Ryan Schrader, three players who are widely considered among the best RT in the league. It is a fair market deal, but not quite the value we are making it out to be.

The biggest surprise to me is that Belichick valued Cannon among the league's best RTs so far before his emergence.

He's been stellar this past year. Now is the time to back it up. Only then will we know if the deal was worth it.
I think his play has improved no end but would not be surprised if we added depth at tackle in first two rounds.

Most people DESPISED the deal at the time, that's why Bill is the best to ever do it and we're all fans complaining on a forum.

This is one of the biggest steals out there right now, Wagner is about to get about to get close to $10m a year at RT.

Cannon signed for 5/32.5 would be like 5/47.5 right now on the market, literally saved about $3m a year over 5 years.
