Scenario:

No one claims Moss. He loves Tommy-boy so much he comes back on a one-year deal. He is so glad to be back, he reverts to the 2007 Moss and makes outstanding grabs and is a model citizen.

Pats let him walk as a FA after the season. Some team, seeing the re-vitalized Moss, signs him to a big contract.

Pats get third round compensatory pick.

because he has accrued 10 years, the maximum return would be a 5th round comp. pick

A 5th at best

Heck, if we're going to make up things that have zero chance of happening, why stop at a compensatory 3rd rounder? We may as well say the Pats have a chance of getting 2 #1's for him. That can happen if he clears waivers, signs in New England, then after we win the Super Bowl, the Patriots franchise him (because when he signs in New England they'll make him get rid of that clause where he couldn't be franchised) then the Raiders make him a huge contract offer, Patriots don't match the offer, we get Oakland's next 2 #1's.

IOW: Not going to happen.

Why a zero chance? Some team is going to sign Moss, probalby on a one-year-deal. So they let him go after a year, someone else picks him up and the first team gets a comp pick. I'm seeing this pretty much as a given and you see it as impossible. Weird. The only "if" is whether the Pats get him or not. Probably not, but the chances are not zero.

And you thought my scenario was iffy?

He was making fun of your scenario. He didn't really think that would happen.

No, his scenario is actually possible, if perhaps astronomically improbable. Yours, on the other hand, is completely impossible, simply because Moss cannot result in more than a 5th round compensatory selection, something that has been covered innumerable times on this board and any other Moss news story.
