Not wanting to leave them to random chance and to prevent people from saying favoritism (most people, not you or Enema Boy, evidently), the division winner of each divison plays the division winner of those two other conference divsions. And of course, the second place teams play each other, etc.

Actually, there's a very specific reason for this--it means that every team plays four first-place teams, four second-place teams, etc. It's also why I'm so confused about increasing the length of the regular season: how are you going to keep the schedules as balanced as possible? [I don't think it's mathematically possible to increase the schedule to 17 or 18 games without making it less fair than it is today.]
