So much for BB to Gints rumor

Not that I'm concerned about BB to the Giants in any way, but this would actually make it much more likely.

We know BB is under contract for 2007. If he were going to the Giants this is exactly what they would do rather than fire Coughlin and hire a new coach knowing they would fire him after next year.

Yeah, a one year extension isn't exactly locking him in stone. Regardless, we're set for these playoffs and next year. I guess we'll worry about it later.

Except it said Coughlin still had a year left on his deal so if they gave him a one year extension wouldn't that mean his contract would now run through 2008?

And why would they bother doing that if they were already planning on letting him go in 2007 which is when his original would have been up?

They're waiting for Cowher.

I think both Tiki and Strahan were cancers on that team.. Too much talking on that team.. Too many comercials, and Coughlin cant control it.. Maybee with Tiki gone, and who knows maybe gap tooth boy will retire, they will have a great season.. But the BB and Scott Pioli rumors will die until next yr at this time, or until we know both of there contract status..

Strahan is still a cancer as well as Shockey and Eli doesn't say boo. The rumors don't make sense. Most of the Pats palyers are in their prime minus linebackers, faulk, dillon, and rodney.

The team is set up to compete for the next 5 years. The FO could entrench their legacy in history for all time.

Well, I don't know that BB's contract expires after 2007, but assuming you are right, then both BB's and Coughlin's contracts were set to expire expire after 2007, and the Giants gave Coughlin an extension, so he is under contract for a year after BB is a FA.

How does this make it more likely that BB is going to the Giants?

From what I have heard from some friends in NY, the extension is actually a mental thing. The ownership apparently didn't think the players would want to play for a guy who was in the last year of his contract and probably on his way out no matter what. Instead, he is supposedly there for 2 more years now, but unless they are extremely successful next year, they will just fire him anyway.

Yeah, but at the bottom of the press release it said

"The NY Giants are extending Tom Coughlin's contract one year FOR NOW."

Come on, if that isn't an easily escapable clause, I don't know what is. I think they are just lying in wait for the end of NE's season.

You actually question how this makes it much more likely that the Giants will be on the coaching market after the 2007 season than if they fired Coughlin today?

If they fire Coughlin today, they hire a new coach, and almost certainly give him at least 2 years to prove himself. It would take an Art Shell like season for the Giants to be back on the coaching prowl 12 months from now.

They kept Coughlin and gave him one last shot. They added a year to his deal for show because he can't go into that locker room as a lame duck in both perception and contract status. Unless he wins next year, everyone knows he is gone and they eat the one year (if and it is a big IF it is guarenteed) which really is no different financially for the than if they fired him now because they would have to eat 1 year.

I've never bought the BB to the Giants stuff but if you do, then this makes perfect sense.

Driving back to Boston from NYC yesterday, I was listening to New York sports radio. Tiki is apparently very popular, especially since he had a great year and did all he could to help the team (according to the Giants pundits). The only complaint anyone -- either the talk show hosts or the callers -- had about Tiki was that he looked too happy after the Giants lost, but of course he was happy to be done with NFL football. The big complaint is about Manning who shows no leadership even on the sidelines and makes poor decisions on the field. But, the team invested so much in him, they're pretty much stuck with him for at least another year. The opinions on Coughlin are really mixed. A lot of the veterans on the team don't like him, but his record isn't bad (doing better than Parcells over the last 3 years).
