Jerod Mayo's changing role with New England Patriots notable in win - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN

The big takeaway is that Freeny is somewhat ahead of Mayo on the depth chart, and also seems to be more effective when he plays.

Mason is also pulling ahead of Jackson at OG.

Easley was credited with 4 QB hits.

One thing I'm wondering about, based on this article plus a BB transcript: Is Collins always in on FG/XP defense, or is it only against teams with a particularly low blocking technique who thus create the opportunity for the hurdle play?

Wow, I singled out Freeney as having a horrible game. If Mayo is playing worse than that, I don't know what to say. But Freeney was ate multiple times on his assignments, and was slow when a guy like TE Allen already had the ball. He was also missing tackles when he had his mitts on the runner. I don't think Freeney is ready to play football in the NFL, and if Mayo isn't himself, then we need Bostic to come on strong, and Hightower to come back.

I think that you underestimate both situations. Mason and Freeney have been ahead in the depth chart for weeks. Freeney played in twice as many plays as Mayo.

I find it very encouraging that the lesser rated Guard, Shaq Mason is doing so well. Tre Jackson has been rotated more often, but I am confident of his overall talent. Part of his more prevalent rotatio,n is that there are more RGs available at his position.

I hope that Mayo will get more snaps as he heals. It seems that knee injuries take more than an offseason to re-acquire the flexibility that a MLB needs. Freeny is nowhere near as good as a healthy Jerod.

Noted it last night in-game, Mayo isn't even close to 100%. Pre-injury, he could get off blocks extremely effectively. Even if engaged, he could make plays to either side with surprising effectiveness. Last night, there were a couple times where it was noticeable that, once engaged, he was just out of the play.

Which is no surprise, really. Patellar tendons are serious business, much harder to come back from than an ACL tear. Wouldn't surprise me if he never makes it all the way back to 100%. Hopefully he can get a lot closer than he is right now, though, because as it currently stands I wouldn't be surprised if he's a gameday inactive once Bostic is ready to go.
