So far, through 3 games (an admittedly very small sample size), I see some similarities between this team and the 2001 squad. From the eyeball test:

- Very good defense
- Solid, not spectacular, running game
- Excellent special teams
- Brady that is more of a game manager than dominant passer
- One key receiver (2001 Brown, 2014 Edelman)

By the numbers:

Offense:
- 2001: 23.2 ppg, 305.1 ypg; 2014: 22.0 ppg, 303.1 ypg
- Rushing: 2001: 3.8 ypc; 2014: 3.5 ypc
- Individual: 2001: Brown (33.0% of the team's total receptions); 2014: 32.8% of the team's total receptions)

Defense:
- 2001: 17.0 ppg, 334.5 ypg; 2014: 16.3 ppg, 272.7 ypg

It's obviously not an exact parallel as there are some differences, and we know that the 2001 team had championship mettle. We don't know that, yet, about this team.

Of course, we'd all like the same outcome in the end.

the boston globe thinks so too.

We don't know how good the D will eventually be at this point, but it might be as good. Cause its going to have to be.

Brady is 'game manager' because at this point he has to be. His O line is atrocious.

The 2001 o line was better.

Solder is no Matt Light

Devey is no J Andruzzi

Who ever is playing center at the moment is no Damien Woody

Cannon is no Steven Neil

Although Vollmer is probably as good as Greg Robinson -Randal

And Dave Gumball or (or whatever his name is), is no Dante Scarnecchia

The 2001 offensive line was not all that.

Andruzzi was a JAG who was soon out of football. Devey is worse, yeah, but he's a fill-in for Connolly. Won't be there long. Light was a rookie. Light as a rookie and Solder are a wash. Neal was a guy who wasn't even playing at that point because he was a wrestler who didn't play high school football. As for GRR, how can you possibly compare him to Vollmer, who was a Pro Bowler. GRR was never in the same universe as Vollmer.

Woody was the only upgrade on that 2001 line over the current line. Scarnecchia had them playing hard, however. Don't forget that Mike Compton and Grant Williams were playing in that Super Bowl, two guys who were released by their previous teams.
