Shaughnessy actually has the mot juste

Another creative interpretation. Sure, "'the equivalent of the devil himself."

Theatrical today.

Some people enjoy the drama.

Shaughnessy has stated many times on the radio that he roots for no teams - local or not local - he roots for the "story", as do most of the media in this market. They obviously lean toward "wanting" the local teams to fail, to have quarterback controversies, to have losing streaks, etc., because it gives them more to write about and ***** about on the radio.
For Shaughnessy, the better story is the Pats going to Buffalo Sunday and losing, so if that happens, wonderful for him because he can write one of his ponderous, filled with recycled quotes and 30 year old pop culture references columns about the Pats, Bob Kraft, former Columbia intramural scatback and his stopwatch, etc.
If the Pats go up to Orchard Park and blow doors off, then it's the march of the tomato cans. The Patriots cannot win in the local media's eyes, unless they win the super bowl and dominate every game.
And then it would be they must have cheated...

Patsfans.com - where everyone who's ever said a discouraging word about the Patriots is the equivalent of the devil himself.

Truisms are still True.

Patchick, but I strongly disagree with you there.

He has a very personal agenda against Bob Kraft and his family. He has a deep, cultural, multi-decade agenda against the Kraft family. it is obvious to anyone who reads the potshots he takes against them. Surely, you did not miss the "cartoonish" reference to Bob Kraft in the column you reference. That is mild compared to what he usually pulls.

I agree with you that his writing IS a lazy route to attention, but there is nothing lazy or haphazard about his campaign against the Kraft family.
For years after Kraft bought the team Shaughnessy would refer to him as Robert "Thanks Myra" Kraft.
He stopped doing that when the Pats got good and started winning.

Bill Belichick was ridiculed by the mediots when he was in Cleveland and was left taking the blame for the owner.

He was then ridiculed by the New York mediots for the way he left New Jersey. Some even hinted that he might be having a nervous breakdown.

Then, before he even coached his first game here he was called "duplicitous pond scum" by a Globe writer.

Now that Belichick has the hammer he uses it.

It's payback time.

The duplicitous pond scum quote actually came from a Herald writer, Kevin Mannix. But, overall, I agree with your points, except one: I'd like to see him use the hammer more, but sort of understand why he doesn't.

Yep, he's sometimes mistakenly labeled a "hater." He has no such agenda; I honestly don't think he cares who wins the games. His style of negativity is just a lazy route to attention.

I find this absolutely inconceivable. Someone who has spewed vitrol for the better part of a quarter century cannot be at bottom, a nice person. What genuinely nice person wastes the better part of his/her life spreading a message of pessimism, of acrimony and bitterness?

This is one person who is going to have enormous regrets on his deathbed.

PP2, I agree with every word, except those in your last sentence. I believe he'll go to his grave chuckling over his innate misery. If he's loved it this long, he'll love it forever.

Shaughnessy is like a creepy uncle who gets drunk at the reception and gropes the sister of the Bride. This morning's column about opening night at TD Garden that crapped on the Bruins (and Celtics and Red Sox and Patriots) was unnecessary and devoid of any new information.

Dan, go away. Just go away.

If there's anything I've learned from life, it's that you become what you do- if you have a positive influence on other people's life, you become happy and positive, conversely, if you spread misery into everyone's life, you become miserable and lonely.

Generally when a person is on his/her deathbed, there's a lot of time for reflection and retrospection as a means of quantifying one's life, i.e., to give it meaning, and when he realizes that all he did was piss on everyone's parade for the better part of 30 something years, there's no way he'll take pride in having done that.
