Semi-OT: Why Rex's challenge was non-reviewable

If I remember correctly, the unsportsmanlike penalty is supposed to be called when the coach challenges a play that would already have been reviewed to begin with. Like challenging a TD or turnover

And here I thought it wasn't reviewable, because the flag came late and the ball was snapped before the refs could stop the clock. (I heard Carey's explanation but didn't buy it. While Pereira does a great job for Fox, Mike Carey comes across as a bumbling idiot sometimes, so I don't take his word for it every time. I realize that this is a bit presumptuous of me, but disagreeing with the ref is a way of life for NFL fans, so I'm good with that.)

But I digress....My question is, were the play reviewable and the refs didn't notice the challenge flag in time, could they take the just completed play (a crappy point, in this case) off the board and go back and review it, if the flag was thrown before the snap?

(Of course, there's still the open question of why the hell Rex wanted to challenge that play given that even if it were allowed and he won, it'd be 4th-and-9.)

The rule about only challenging spots if a first down is in question presents some odd scenarios. There have been a few times where a Patriots receiver or runner has come up 3 inches short of a first down in a key situation. Replay shows that in reality, the ball carrier was down more like 2 feet before the marker. So in this situation, it was actually better for the Patriots that it wasn't ruled a first down. If it had been, the opposing coach would've challenged and had the ball moved to the correct spot, 2 feet before the first down. Because it wasn't, the Patriots are facing 4th down with 3 inches to go, and there's nothing the opposing coach can do to get the ball placed where it actually should be.

if it's a non-challengeable play (but not an automatically reviewed play), the challenge flag is just picked up. if the coach challenges an automatically reviewed play, they lose a timeout, or if the team is out of timeouts, they get a 15-yard penalty.

“We erroneously allowed a challenge,” Blandino said. “We don’t change the call on the field, thankfully, but we charge Jacksonville with a timeout, which we should not have. The referee should tell the coach, ‘This is not reviewable,’ allow him to pick up the flag, and don’t charge him a timeout. This is different from when he challenges during a time period when he can’t, after a scoring play or inside two minutes. That’s an automatic timeout or a 15-yard penalty if they’re out of timeouts. Here, because he’s confused about a rule, we allow him to pick up a challenge, and we don’t charge him a timeout. . . We should not have allowed that challenge.”

this just happened in the redskins-giants game last night. coughlin challenged a touchdown in the fourth quarter (turns out he was probably right about it not being a touchdown) and lost a timeout.

For a few minutes, the grin was wiped off the Giants faces, however, and they suffered flashbacks of the two late collapses. Before holding on for the victory, they allowed two late scores, although it appeared Redskins running back Chris Thompson was down before reaching the end zone.

Coughlin threw the challenge flag, even though scoring plays are automatically reviewed. The Giants were docked their final timeout as a penalty for the illegal challenge. It was the last of a string of calls that Coughlin believes went against the Giants.
