Samrdzija signs with Cubs

Notre Dame WR Jeff Samardzija, a potential early pick at the 2007 NFL draft, has agreed to a 5-year deal with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs had selected Samardzija with a fifth-round draft pick at the major league draft earlier this month. Once the deal is approved by the commissioner's office, Samardzija will join the Boise Hawks, an advanced rookie club of the Northwest League. Samardzija will be able to play at Notre Dame this fall. His plan is to play professional baseball and football after graduating Notre Dame.


Here's a question: Jeremy Bloom wasn't allowed to play football at CU because he took endorsement money for skiing. Now we have Samardzija who is playing professional baseball yet maintains NCAA football eligibility, and Zbikowski boxing professionally yet maintaining eligibility. Can anyone explain that to me?

Is salary/purse good, endorsement bad?

I wondered the same exact thing after the Zibby boxing video.

Well, that's it exactly. Once you endorse a product, you're dead to the NCAA.

Zbikowski boxed in the summer what is called a summer job, and as long as Jeff Samardzija's season is only May through August, the area that does not hurt school status, then he is fine. Supposedly, Bloom's season interfeared(sp?) with school and all, that is why it effected his status. If his sport was a sumer olympic sport, which would not interfear with schooling, he is fine. It is just weird. I do agree that the NCAA needs to work on this, but that is the rule.
