Reiss: Mankins demands trade, will not sign RFA tender

My .02...

The offer Mankins got was actually higher than I thought he'd get. If he doesn't like it, let him sit until he DOES like it. I'm not a fan of losing him, but I'm less of a fan of a player stirring up discontent due to his lack of intelligence, or bad advice from his agent. Dante has shown he can piece something together on fairly short notice, not ideal, but oh well.

I can't imagine any team offering up something more than what a compensatory pick would be worth, unless St. Louis gets creative with their 2012 picks (We don't need more 2011 picks- they DO need them IMO). Mankins was the 32nd pick in the 1st round... basically a second rounder in any trade partner's eyes, and with Mankins' current attitude/salary demands- someone would have to be pretty desperate to offer very much.

How do we know this? Agents do talk (secretly) to other clubs about the possiblility of contracts, and trades. Just because the NFL rules say they cant, doesnt mean it doesnt happen all the time. Right now, we simply dont have much info. We'll learn more as TC approaches.
We know that he was tendered in February, and that his agent could make a deal with any team he wanted to, and force the Pats to match it or let him go. Since no team offered him contract then, what makes anyone, including Mankins, think they will now, after mankins has publicly questioned the integrity of Kraft for offering a $7 mil contract. You really think some other owner is going to chance that?

I'm just as happy he turned it down. I don't think paying an OG a lot more that your CBs, OLBs, and DEs makes any sense at all.

Put Vollmer in at RT. Kaczur's strength is power blocking. He won't be getting owned by speed rushers in the middle of the Oline, and he can't do any worse against Tuck than Mankins did.

I have refrained from involving myself in this discussion, but I have enjoyed the back and forth arguements that I've read. This entire thing confuses me.
The Pats made an offer, DURING THE UNCAPPED YEAR, as they told him. Mankins himself stated that was what he was told by the team. So, what exactly is he upset about? That is the missing piece? There is more to the story, IMO. He has publicly accused the team of lying to him. What did they lie about? Something had to have been said to make him so angry. There is no replacement on the roster for Mankins. WE NEED HIM! Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail.

Yeah, that's kind of what I've been arguing. I don't agree that we can just assume we can do without him and then cross our fingers.

Something happened to piss him off. Fine, but at the age of 28, sometimes things pissed me off that shouldn't have pissed me off but, stuff like that happens. I hope some grownup in the Pats organization can get everybody calmed down enough to see if there's a way to work this through.

I just have a sense of urgency that screwing around with the left side of the OL, just as a lot of other pieces are settling into place and after TB had a great season coming off that injury, is like playing with fire. I could be wrong and maybe everything will be fine, but all I know is that I'd be very happy with another season in which Tommy averages just one sack a game like his line gave him last year.

...

Ummm, lets credit QB. Sacks are at least 50/50. TB was really limited with what he could do last year and poor line play had alot to do with that. Mankins too. He got more then his fair share of steamrollings.

I'm just looking at the result; TB was only sacked 16 times last year, a lot less than his career average. I'll gladly take that line play (in terms of how he was protected) again this year.

Re: Reiss with bad news on Mankins

All I can say is f**k you Mankins, hope you get traded and blow out your knee on the first play with your new team. What's this world coming to that 6.5 mill a year is an insult to play GUARD in the NFL ? F**k off Mankins you greedy piece of s**t

It's an insult to the American way of life to leave money on the table when negotiating.

You're right. I completely forgot he was a RFA when i made that post. Thanks for the correction

that would be great if the pats played against tuck all 16 weeks. focusing on one game a couple of years ago is not logical. if it was, then why not blame the coach for not making any adjustments at halftime and sticking with what didn't work.

otherwise, it makes no sense. the notion that kaczur will step in without a hitch is ridiculous.

the notion that kaczur will step in without a hitch is ridiculous.

That is a pretty high expectation. Mankins has been a big part of this line for a number of years, and it is no small comment that John Hannah, who rarely compliments and is possibly the greatest guard to play the game, thinks highly of Mankins. Nick Kaczur doesn't approach that level of competence, and you would have to be kidding yourself to think otherwise. He is a decent back-up/replacement lineman.

I am still hoping this works itself out somehow. The root of this problem is unknown, but I do not begrudge a player, with a limited shelf life, from getting the most from his short career. Ask Andre Johnson how the team mentality served him when his prime is past and he left $20 million plus on the table with a mediocre team that he will never recover. The Texans will not reward him for that sacrifice.

The lie could be that he would be the highest paid player at standards a few years ago, which given the Saints deal was unanticipated. Law made the same "lied to me" commentary years ago. I do not believe it was ever clear what the lie actually was, but that obviously didn't work out for the relationship. At this point, either side, no side or both sides could be the heavy in this dispute.
