More on the Casey Hampton impact - Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston
Wilfork, who is four years younger than Hampton, will command a richer deal than Hampton. But Hampton's deal helps establish the current-day market for nose tackles who play in 3-4 defenses, and it wasn't a blockbuster.

When Wilfork, his wife Bianca, and agent Kennard McGuire dissected the finer points of Hampton's deal, they couldn't have been thrilled.

So, Hampton, who is 4 years older than Wilfork, basically is getting paid the Franchise amount. And Hampton is, arguably, as good as Wilfork.

So, I don't see Vince getting $10 million a year.. Maybe 8.5 or so..

The best case is that other teams use this contract with a bump for age and Vince realizes the crazy, monster offer he's looking for isn't out there and re-signs for a good amount with us; that said, it only takes one team to say they'd pay him a ton.

True - But which team is going to do that??? Especially with the thought of giving up 2 first round draft choices.. Which is what I believe the Pats will hold out for.

What I worry about is some team agreeing to some big number that the Patriots won't match but then the other team can't agree to trade terms with the Patriots - because you're right, the other team wouldn't sign the UFA contract and pay two #1s. That leaves us with no trade but Wilfork being unhappy knowing the contract he wanted was out there. It's just a worst case though.

Doesn't matter if they agree to trade terms if they make the offer sheet VW accepts and the pats don't match they can just say oh well give us the 2 frist rounders and if they won't then VW can just keep looking..

that is the price to sign VW away 2 firsts

its negotiable though

its negotiable though

Everything is negotiable but I don't see why you would take less if you are the Pats. Wilfork is the cornerstone of the 3-4 D right now. There's no guarantee that Cody, who struggles with weight issues could step in and be as good, and Brace has been underwhelming up till now.

Isn't this kind of just stating the obvious?

Of course it impacts Wilfork.

But they could agree on a contract without the offer sheet because they're unwilling to trade two firsts. Then they go to the Patriots to try to make a trade. If they make a trade - great - but if they can't agree to a trade after they've verbally agreed to a contract, that's the scenario I'm talking about.
