Cornerback Asante Samuel and his representatives have discussed a plan for him to return to the Patriots, possibly next week, according to a source involved with the discussions.

Agent Alonzo Shavers said he had not spoken to Samuel in the last 24 hours, so a final decision has not been made.

edit: Now Reiss has posted an update, although there is really nothing new in it:

Cornerback Asante Samuel and his representatives have had recent discussions on him returning to the Patriots in the coming days, a sign that Samuel plans to join the team and not carry through on his threat to sit out until the 10th week of the season.

Samuel is likely to return next week, which coincides with the team shifting toward more regular-season preparations. Samuel realizes he needs time to prepare for the regular-season opener Sept. 9 against the Jets.

The newness is that Reiss said it and he mentioned the head of Asante's management team by name.

The problem with these other "scoop" reporters is not how often they are right or wrong.

The problem is these writers will put tonights dinner on the same plate as last night's garbage and you have to guess which is which.

That's right - that's the newness of the first article I linked. It was the "update" that didn't really have anything new.

Agreed - that's why I thought it was worth starting a separate thread. The fact that Mike Reiss reported it gives it credibility. I thought that in and of itself was newsworthy.

Felger's reporting that Samuel's signing with Green Bay:singing:

Schefter from NLFN is usually pretty good......but now that Reiss has said it I know there is hope! It's nice to have a pats guy with a no BS approach:cool:

schefter is more reliable than reiss, reiss is good but he rarely breaks stories he just confirms them, schefter is wired into the league office and hasnt been wrong on anything the pats have done after hes reported it
