Rotoworld article says that there are reports that the Pats are seriously interested and considering a tailback in round 2 - Jordan Todman or Kendell Hunter are the two interests.

Which of these would fit the Pats mold better?

I'm a big fan of Hunter's, but a bigger fan of Shane Vareen. I'd be happy with with either, I think they both offer a similar skill set. Both are short, compact guys who contribute in the passing game both as receivers and blockers.

As for Todman, after watching both Darius Butler and Donald Brown go nowhere their first couple of years, I'm just anti-Uconn until they produce a player who can make it in the NFL.

Huh...I hadn't noticed the pattern, but now that you mention it you can add
Cody Brown and William Beatty to the list.

If the rumor is a 2nd round running back, I would think that LeShoure, Williams and Thomas are also in the mix as possibilities.

i would think so too. i like Hunter alot, but if they're gonna pull the trigger on a back in the 2nd round, i would hope they set their sights a little higher than Todman. like you said, LeShoure, Williams, Hunter, Ingram if he falls, Vereen. I also like Mario Fannin but hes a late rounder.

<---------- Nope, not interested at all

I honestly don't seen Vereen as an option since he has issues with holding onto the ball.

Williams and LeShoure are issues because of they are below average pass blockers and have issues picking up the blitz.

Fannin seems like he'd be a steal, but, again, the issue is his pass blocking. Everyone knows he is a damn good receiver out of the backfield and at 5'10 and 231, he'd be damn good in short yardage.. Especially with his speed.

Though Hunter is 5'7, he is 200 lbs. Very solidly built.. Good at blitz pick-up and pass blocking. Excellent receiver out of the back-field. I've heard Hunter compared to Jamaal Charles and Ray Rice.. Not sure I agree, just repeating what I've heard.

While I share you concerns about pass blocking a picking up the blitz, I think that these skills can be learned in the pros. After all, most running backs coming to the nfl were top backs in college and weren't call upon much to block or pick up blitzes.

It is all supply and demand. I count only 8 teams (including the Pats) that have RB anywhere on their draft radar...not including specialty backs or late round flyers:

Fins (High interest)
Bengals (High if Benson doesn't re-sign)
Giants (Medium interest)
Packers (Medium)
Broncos (Medium)
Bucs (Low Interest)
Rams (Low)

Looks to me like there are 8 backs before you run into the specialty guys:

Ingram
Leshoure
Ryan Williams
Vareen
Daniel Thomas
Todman
Murray
Hunter

While these guys may have day 1 or 2 grades, there likely aren't enough teams seriously looking at RB versus other needs. At least one of these guys is going to be available on day 3...possibly as late as the 5th round. Very possible that 2 or 3 of these guys will be sitting there when the Pats pick in round 4. And that isn't even including Delone Carter and Roy Helu who are getting some mentions as day 2 possibilities.

I'm not against the Pats looking RB in the 2nd round (in fact I mock them RWilliams at #60), but once you get by the first 4 or 5 backs the Pats are likely bidding against themselves until well into day 3. As I've said many times before about this draft, go big or don't bother.

What about Tyvon Branch? He's really good. Deon Anderson started for Dallas for several years.

How are those Indy running backs doing anyway? I bet Brown would do alright in a place where RBs actually ran the ball once in a while.

As a PSU fan, it always strikes me that people remember the busts. That's why people knock so many PSU running backs. Curtis Enis, Ki-Jana Carter, Blair Thomas--ooooh, stay away from the PSU running backs. There's something in the water in Happy Valley that weakens ACLs. They blow them instantly when they get onto an NFL football field.

Left out of the discussion of course is that PSU RBs as a group have run for more yards than any RBs from any other school in NFL history.

John Cappelletti, Lydell Mitchell, Franco Harris, Richie Anderson, DJ Dozier, Curt Warner, Larry Johnson. These are the guys off the top of my head. I'm sure there are many more. Heck, Leroy Thompson once caught 65 passes out of the backfield for New England.

I like Kendell Hunter and Demarco Murray in rounds 2 or 3.

Jacquizz is my RB for round 4 though. :rocker:
