According to Josh Buchanon at Draftdaddy.com, Abilene Christian RB Bernard Scott is scheduled to have a March 19 private workout with the Pats. The info is on draftdaddy.com's blog for today.

Interesting if true that the Pats would even be looking at a RB given the Fred Taylor signing. It sounds to me like a smokescreen, but there's always the chance that they could look to draft someone if they were to trade LoMo.

I don't believe they waste their time with smokescreens. He, apparently, would have gone to a better football school if he wasn't a trouble maker. At the combine he was a Top Performer is all except bench press. His 3-cone and 20 yd shuttle were best among RB. His 40 is very slow for a 200 pounder. Also, he is 25 years old. IDK if that is good or bad. I would say 5th round at the earliest.

I agree not a Pats type player but I though he was closer to 220lbs which makes is forty time easier to digest. I think if we do go after a RB if this draft I think it might be a replacement for Kevin Faulk. I still think that Devon Moore is the man to get in the 5th or 6th round.

He's a change-of-pace back w/ excellent hands. Reportedly, his feet and vision are most impressive (I agree). And how is his 4.44 40 "very slow for a 200 pounder"?

His age doesn't bother me, nor does his off-field issues -- past is past -- and if the Pats approve, who are we to critique. My ONLY concern after I saw him run, was reading about his lack of experience in pass protection, which may hurt him as a third-down back. This is something to strongly consider.

I give him a thumbs up as a runner and receiver on day two.

I was talking about his 4.56 40 at the combine. Even 4.44 would be a tad slow for small, change-of-pace back. Key word is pace. As in, the guy can run faster than the starter. He is basically the same as Jerome Harrison for the Browns. I'm not saying he couldn't have a role. At least he should be elusive.

We don't have our 5th round pick anymore (traded for WR Lewis). So I guess that makes him 6th round at the earliest.

He showed well in Texas vs. The Nation. Part of the reason to conduct private workouts and visitations is to answer questions, in most cases it means NE doesn't have all the answers they'd like to have regarding a prospect.

Obviously your source is different than the one most here refer to. I think your 4.56 comes from NFL.com, while NFL Draft Scout's numbers are the most often used by the majority of posters. They list his 40 as 4.44, which is the 4th fastest time of 49 listed RBs, fastest being 4.39. Here's their updated top 700: NFL Draft - 2009 Draft Prospects - CBSSports.com Football

Thanks for defining what a change-of-pace back is, but I seriously doubt we're in the dark here. And BTW, 4.44 only appeared in Faulk's dreams, as he's never come close to that time in his career, yet no one in Pats land would complain about him changing the pace.

The Pats are still evaluating him. After viewing his film, and his performance at the all-star game, they may (or may not) have already interviewed him. With this private workout, the Pats coaches get to see his skills up close and personal, while continuing the interview process in a different setting. In addition, the series of drills are team specific, making it far easier to evaluate him for the Pats offense. His talent was borderline incredible -- but at the D2 level. We'll soon know how this talent vs. character prospect is considered by the NFL, and from what I've seen and read, I wouldn't mind taking a chance on his skills on day two.

We more than likely will get a compensatory pick in the 5th round, based on our FA lost last year. That is my uneducated guess.

I would be absolutely floored if the Pats drafted Bernard Scott.

Bernard is from my home town so I know all too well about his story. In fact he was involved in a fight with my brother (they weren't fighting against each other directly, they were just on opposing sides of a big, alcohol-fueled, racially motivated brawl). The fight completely destroyed a good football team we had that year. Bernard was forced to transfer and he never really played much HS football again. But he was the second best HS football player I've ever seen (behind some guy named Chedrick Ricks). My high school played a district game versus a town where Colt McCoy's dad now coaches, and we were at about our own 20 with just seconds left in the half, Bernard promptly took the screen pass, juked his way past about half of the opposing team, and scored a TD with 0:00 left on the clock. The talent is unquestionably there, it's just that the attitude may not be, but everyone can change.

I've brought him a a few times.........character-wise, I believe he would thrive in the patriots environment......he had some issues early in college, but has been good for a couple of years.......maybe all he needed to do is find his way.....

Can Bernard Scott stay out of trouble with the law though? He's got some character red flags.

“He hates school, doesn’t trust a lot of people and obviously has some anger issues. I’m hoping that he’s matured some, but he maybe is one of the best pure running backs as far as balance, skills sets, vision and elusiveness.”

Character vs talent. Hmmm? And what are these anger issues the coach is talking about?

Pats just doing their job-studying. Keep an eye on Marlon Lucky out of Nebraska. A talented receiving back out of Nebraska. This kid went through to many scheme changes from Callahan to Pellini-his athleticism was somewhat buried. He showcased some of that at the senior bowl. Not an every down runner. Kevin Faulk role player.

1:03 is impressive. Stopped on a dime. Ugh since i cant post links cause of my post count go to draftguys dot com look at Scott there.

Thanks for linking to our Scott profile! A scout told me that he'd be a 3rd rounder on talent alone, should be a 5th rounder because he has matured, and will probably be a 7th rounder/UDFA because teams are wary of taking someone with his record.

You've got an interesting draft site - well done!

:welcome:

Possibly the biggest turd in the punchbowl that is the NFL draft. Most of the time, Bob Kraft gives Belichick a free hand, but it wouldn't surprise me if in this instance Mr. K says "No way do I want this guy representing me, my family, and the New England Patriots."

The kid's very good....not unique. Unless he's the next coming of Jim Brown with a dash of Barry Sanders, no thanks.
