Barring Belichick(the obvious choice!), who would you rather have as a head coach. Based on the ridiculous comparison of Tony Dungy to Bill Walsh, I was thinking about current head coaches that have either experienced similar success or seem to have the potential, which would you rate as the best head coach right now. I am adding Cowher, as he is only one year removed and could be back in the next few years, as a candidate.

1. Mike Shanahan
2. Tony Dungy
3. Brian Billick
4. Eric Mangini
5. Jon Gruden
6. Bill Cowher
7. None of the above

*gulp* I'm not sure I wanna admit it. In my defense, I had a beer. So I can always claim impairment. ...

Naw, I just can't say it.

AQUA left so I'll just go ahead and write in Cam Cameron.

Brad Seely.

I'd have to go with Billick, Cowher or Shannahan in no particular order

How about Charlie Weis? He'd be my choice if Belichick left tomorrow.

I chose Shanahan because he has the big picture stuff and the fine details down.

What skills does an NFL head coach need?

1. For me it's the in game stuff, i.e. clock management, substitutions, timeouts/challenges, 4th down, playcalling.

2. The personnel side. Could he be a GM only and still field a good team?

3. Preparation. Gameplanning, practicing the gameplan and motivation.

Shanahan can do all three as far as I can tell. Reid can do numbers 2 and 3 well but other than playcalling he is not good at overall game management. Herm Edwards, Bill Cowher and Marty Schottenheimer are good at motivation and do prepare very well but their teams usually fall short because they are so bad at number 1. Dungy can do numbers 1 and 3 very well but isn't a front office guy. Belichick and Walsh run/ran the whole show. The motivational leader as coach in the NFL is overrated because most players are mature and highly motivated anyway and they keep each other motivated.

Anything else an NFL head coach needs as a skill to master the job?

Shanahan. Anyone who can give it to BB's teams they way he does surely could replace him.

I agree.

It has to be Shanahan, he is the only guy that consistently beats BB. I think he is the only coach that has beaten BB twice in the same season?
