According to ESPN he has demanded a trade and the rangers are looking around, might be a good fit here if demand isn't to high?

Some kind of package deal for Salty could be worked out as well

A good fit where? He wants to be traded because he refuses to play anywhere but SS and last I checked, Lowrie filled that spot.

Beyond that, Young is an average hitter (in that he only hits for average and has zero power), is a horrible defender, and has an insane contract. How he would be an upgrade to the Sox is beyond me.

What?

Young is a gold glover who consistently has one the highest fielding percentages in the league, and his bat is much better than Lowrie's. There isn't a GM in the league that would choose Lowrie over Young if given the opportunity.

Young winning the GG this year was a joke. The Gold Glove awards are pretty much useless these days anyway.

Young has a ton of money owed to him and he has been in the decline for the last 3 years. I am opposed to seeing Young on the team. I would rather go with Lowrie taking everything into consideration.

Based on the rediculous contract that Young has, I think most GMs would go with Lowrie.

As far as the GG thing, that really is not indicative of a great defender (see Jeter). In fact, Young's defense actually has a negative win share value. Add to that, his hitting has declined dramatically over the past few seasons.

young is clearly declining. hes got no range at ss anymore. i would take young over lugi but not lowrie.

And I'll say right back to you; What? You must be watching a different Young than the rest of us, his range sucks and his bat is on the back nine, plus he has a brutal contract, we've already got a guy like that on the team in Lugo.

Priceless.

Young's middle name is 'disabled list'. Now if we could work a deal and get our old SS Hanley Ramirez back I'd be happy. Not the greatest glove but his bat is quite usefull.

THe guy makes $20M a year, and needs to be moved to 3B because his defense is so bad.

He has negative value.

To be fair he had a .984 fielding percentage last year, only 11 errors, in 151 games so I think some of you are a little harsh on his fielding. Also he hit 12 home runs and drove in 84 runs and made it to the all-star game

He has no range. NONE. Worse than Jeter. The rangers want to move him to third because hes such a poor fielder. That is why he wants to be traded. He doesn't make many errors because he doesn't get to many balls.

Michael Young's UZR/150 over the last couple years:
2004: -21.4
2005: -27.1
2006: -3.7
2007: -10.1
2008: -3.9

Thats BAD. really Bad.

THis year, this is what the Red Sox had:

Lowrie: 21.0
Velasquez: 0
Lugo:-1.6
Cora:-4.4

I don't think Lowrie is actually that good, but hes much better than Young. Hes also much younger, much cheaper, and has a much higher ceiling at this point.

I'm not sure anyone would claim Young if the Rangers put him on waivers. He might have the worst contract in the majors.

another baseless claim. Michael Young has played in 155+ games in EVERY ONE of the last 7 seasons! You couldn't be any LESS prone to the DL than him.

I agree that he is on the decline, and his fielding is not what it was before, but I think some of you need to look at the numbers before you start comparing Lowrie to him. Especially since Lowrie has very little range also. To say "Lowrie is much better than Young" is beyond absurd. The fact that he's younger is the only advantage he has.

Lowrie's UZR (Zone Rating) was +20 this year, very good. I think hes a +10 or so player, and the 20 is too high.

Young's UZR is about -15 over his career. Thats really really bad.

Michael Young over the last 2 years has hit 300/340/400 and is declining rapidly.

Lowrie hit 260/340/400. Playing half the year with a broken wrist. He hits for less average than young, but has much better plate discipline, and power. And thats at 24, with a broken wrist.

Hes an equivalent hitter to young, plays much better defense, is cheaper, and has upside. I think you should take a look at the numbers. Lowrie is the better player RIGHT NOW. Michael Young makes $16M a year. Jed Lowrie makes 390K
