And from this thread, this is the current state of our draft board.

3rd round, #96
4th round, #137
5th round, #163

5th round, #183 - compensatory pick

I got no problems with this list. Be nice if Hightower returns, and Blount as well.

But yeah, so far so good.

From earlier tonight when the Cooks news broke..

Belichick's a greedy bastard. He's not finished yet... and I like it.
What is the Springsteen lyric," poor man want to be rich, rich man want to be king. King ain't satisfied til he owns everything.".............

Taking a look at the list, the only spots which could be seen as needs:

LB until hopefully Hightower returns. Still could use another after that.
RB. Still need the bruiser type.
1 interior OL to start or depth
1 DT. Maybe 1 DE.
A third OT
Trading Butler would create a need at CB.
Trading Jimmy doesn't necessarily create a need at QB depending on how you feel about Brissette.

Good job.
One Q: Are you sure about King? Didn't catch the news of him beeing tenderd/re-signed..

Hell yeah! Badlands was the first song I ever heard by him. Classic :D
Also it's "rules everything", but close enough. ;)

To add to insane roster/cap situation before new additions:

Curr. projected 2018 comp picks: 3 -- Sheard (4th), Bennett (4/5th), Mingo (7th)

approx Cap remaining: 40M+
(guessing Branch & Williams cap hits + Amendola restructure(hopefully)/release)

Note: Pats were awarded a good 1M in adjusted cap yesterday.

61 signed .. 29 to go
___

Hightower's projected cap -- around 10M
Money for current Draft picks -- less than 1M (top 51 contracts rule)

/projected cap hit for #72 is 0.7M so around 3y vet minimum - so by the current draft capital - their cap hits might not even count against cap by 51 top contracts rules or will just slightly above/

Money for in-season transactions, incentives etc. 5-10M

so even after signing of Hightower Pats will have 20-25M to spend (or carry over).

Not sure. I just went off those links I posted. If they're wrong I'm wrong.

Good work slam.
Here's another take. The number in parenthesis is the number of starter quality players the Pats' need to play their schemes.
QB could be argued forever, of course, and TE is really unique here because of Gronk's potential vulnerability. I'm trying to be realistic about the talent on other NFL rosters vs. the Pats, i.e. not be a homer.

Strong starters, strong depth – 1 starter goes down = still can win title

QB (1)
Tom Brady / Jimmy Garoppolo / Jacoby Brissett

WR (3)
Julian Edelman / Brandin Cooks / Malcolm Mitchell / Chris Hogan / Danny Amendola / Devin Lucien

CB (3)
Malcolm Butler (RFA) / Stephon Gilmore / Eric Rowe / Cyrus Jones / Justin Coleman / Jonathan Jones

DT (2)
Alan Branch / Malcom Brown / Vincent Valentine / Woodrow Hamilton / Darius Kilgo

S (2)
Devin McCourty / Pat Chung / Duron Harmon

TE (1)
Rob Gronkowski / Dwayne Allen / Matt Lengel / Michael Williams / Rob Housler

Special Teams Aces (2/3)
Matthew Slater / Brandon King / Jordan Richards/ Nate Ebner /Jones’s

Strong starters, weak depth – 1 starter goes down = trouble

T (2)
Nate Solder / Marcus Cannon / Cameron Fleming (RFA) / LaAdrian Waddle / Chase Farris

RB (2)
James White / Dion Lewis / D.J. Foster / Tyler Gaffney

FB (1)
James Develin / Glenn Gronkowski

TE (2)
Rob Gronkowski / Dwayne Allen / Matt Lengel / Michael Williams / Rob Housler

Average NFL Talent From Starters Through Depth

DE (2)
Trey Flowers / Kony Ealy / Rob Ninkovich / Geneo Grissom

G (2)
Shaq Mason / Joe Thuney / Tre' Jackson / Ted Karras / Chris Barker / Jamil Douglas

C (1)
David Andrews

Weak starters

LB (2)
Kyle Van Noy / Elandon Roberts / Shea McClellin / Jonathan Freeny / Trevor Bates

Alright, just for the hell of it, I split the Patriots' roster into two roughly (very roughly) equal strength squads. I assumed that we'd resign all of our free agents, then filled in starter or key sub caliber gaps with currently unsigned free agents (in all caps). I didn't think too hard on the signing of the FAs. Just wanted to fill roster gaps.

Would not both of these squads be favored to finish 1-2 in the AFC East?
