If a playoff game goes to OT, and neither team has scored, but one team is driving toward FG range as time is expiring in the OT period, say 20 seconds left, but it is a long FG at that point. If the time runs out, do they just keep the drive alive and going in to second OT like the would between the end of the first Q and the start of the second Q?

Or do they start over with the second OT which would cause them to need to try a last second long FG.. like the end of regulation?

The end of the first OT is basically the same as the end of 1st quarter/beginning of 2nd quarter in any other game.

The end of the second OT is treated the same as the end of the first half.

NFL Overtime Rules | NFL Football Operations

  • If the score is still tied at the end of an overtime period — or if the second team’s initial possession has not ended — the teams will play another overtime period. Play will continue regardless of how many overtime periods are needed for a winner to be determined.
  • There will be a two-minute intermission between each overtime period. There will not be a halftime intermission after the second period.
  • Another coin toss will be held before the third overtime period. The captain who lost the first overtime coin toss will either choose to possess the ball or select which goal his team will defend, unless the team that won the coin toss deferred that choice.
